I like dryer lint that's been mixed with parrafin, partly cooled and then rolled in more lint to make it fuzzy on the out side. The fuzz catches with just a spark, and then the wax makes it burn like a huge candle wick. It's great for getting a fire started in wet conditions, but it can't handle a lot of wind. The best one for that is magnesium shavings from one of those fire starter bars. In a pinch, some really fine steel wool works great too. If you're in a pine forrest, you can find stumps from dead trees that are impregnated with dried out sap. They burn like road flares.
