but I also like covers of hard songs that show skill set of people playing. I think it is fascinating the ability of some musicians and it motivates me to work harder... like at 5:35 or so-- SO EPIC. Panic Attack (cover band) -- Dream Theater https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Wi3_pUpCtM
here's the original of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" by Poison https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcqWyyHlCDA And here's the cover by Miley Cyrus :P pretty bad if you ask me and lacks the emotions Bret Michaels (Poison's vocalist) put into this song. When he was at a laundromat waiting for his clothes to dry he called his girlfriend on the phone and heard a male voice in the background. Michaels was very devastated and as a result wrote "Every Rose Has Its Thorn". Miley Cyrus can never put the same feelings into the song because thats not her story. In my opinion every song is a story and the only who can tell it best is tho one who lived it. Which is why I think original versions are better. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TSSfl5zGiA
It depends on the cover and what they've done with the song. Is it still somehow a bit original?
I love Peter Hollens' Misty Mountains more than the soundtrack from the films (partly because there's more of the song than what is in the film).
Richard Cheese's cover of Radiohead's Creep is hilarious. Ingrid Michaelson's Creep is beautiful, just as "Scala's," just as Radiohead's. And all in different ways. I like Michaelson for her style as it is, but I like her cover.
I like Postmodern Jukebox, but like some of the "originals" better. But certain works of Bradlee's are better than the original (in my opinion). Then, some are just different, and beautiful in their own way.
A few years back, on a cruise ship, there was this Portuguese lady on board (Ines Santos is her name) who sang Frank Sinatra covers. She was one of the best singers I've ever heard, her covers sounded 20% better than the original :D Generally, I can enjoy a good cover! In her case, I became a huuuuuuuge fan. Unfortunately, only her Portuguese songs can be bought. The other ones can probably only be sang by her on ships.
I like listening to covers, especially when I have already listened to the original song way too many times, so I need something different. This is the one that gets my attention at the moment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTyePL5JvVI
Covers? It depends on how well they can perform and if I like it. Sometimes, people can perform covers well, and others they can't and it's best to leave to the original. But ultimately, it's best to leave to the original.
OMG.. I'm not just "like it", I LOOVEE IT!!! Some people say that "original is the best", but for me sometimes a covers can give a new color and -even- meaning to a song/music.. I think original and covers is two things that can't be compared.. It's on the same level..
Original is best because it's something new that people never thought before, so it's innovative.. -- while -- 1. Covers is a work and an instrument for people to develop their creativity as far as possible.. These covers people can show the world how far their creativity to remake a song/music by their interpretation..
2. They also have challenges because re-make something that -obviously- most people already know is not as easy as you thought.. They must make it REAAALLY attractive and unique so it has it's own "charm" and people will remember it as their cover, not everyone else.. It's REALLY HARD when you re-make a work/music/song and you mustn't lose the essentials from it while you must show your own interpretation and NOT OVERSHADOWED by the original ones..
3. And don't forget that these people is also make their covers by their own perception, interpretation, and ideas -either as group or personal- so it can be considered as an "ORIGINAL", THEIR original..
Sorry if I take this too serious.. I just want to share my thought with you all..
