  • I read and write my own poetry. My reasoning why I enjoy it is because it's an art-form where I can express myself.

A great example is from the movie 'Dead Poets Society'

We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.
    -John Keating

  • I enjoy poetry, but I prefer to write it.

I like to read poetry because EMOTIONS. Like poems can be the most beautiful things in my opinion. I have started to cry because of poems before, just cause I could relate, they evoked a feeling of sadness, nostalgia, remorse, guilt.

What Guys Said 17

  • It's sometimes hard for me to get into poetry. Every once and a while something stands out.

There are times I enjoy watching spoken word poetry on Youtube. This is one I've enjoyed recently:

I'm slowly attempting to be a writer. Poems seem to be the only thing I have patience for at the moment. Rarely do I complete any of them though.

  • I do. The rhyme and rhythm can greatly enhance a poems meaning. I love the linking of unconventional words to draw out an image. They have a way of being so powerful. I'll use Dylan Thomas for example.
Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  • There are times I like it - I have a degree in English and sometimes in college it would be interesting to hear professors give a series of lectures on their take on certain bits of poetry often more interesting than the poetry itself - Half the time you would be going did the poet really mean all that or did they just want to find a word that rhymed.
During my late teens and early 20s I would have dabbled in writing poetry but looking back I realised that I changed to writing prose and short stories because my poetry was so bad. Even that faded out and every six months for the past 20 years I have said to myself I must start writing again even keep a diary.

  • Yes. Particularly that of Tyler Knott Gregson, R. M. Drake, and Christopher Poindexter.
It's also the primary reason I love rock music. Because it's like poetry to me.

    "I was always a thing
that was going to happen to you,
    the lightning that would strike
    on a day that came
    with no thunder,
    and all the shelter
in all the world couldn't have
    saved you.
    All my life
    I've been making my way
    to you."

  • Not generally, I like some poetry. T S Elliot is good, as is Robert Frost.

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
    T S Elliot

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
    Robert Frost

  • I like poetry and actually have some of my work published in the Forever Spoken series. I mainly just write poetry to get my emotions down on paper. Mostly when I can't describe them any other way.
