Why, when depicted in fantasy art, are mermaids, fairies and to a lesser extent angels always naked?

Did anyone else notice this?

  • Because they were pretty much the fanservice of old. Much like comic book and movie characters of today are relatively 'openly' dressed today.

What Guys Said 2

  • Ah yes with the well placed long hair - I suppose human clothes would bring them closer to our world so by having them naked while covered makes them seem mysterious without raising eyebrows.

  • Because nobody can decide what they should be wearing.

What Girls Said 1

  • Mermaids: clam bras aren't very realistic and I doubt they would have clothing.
Faeries: I'm not sure, I'm assuming people can't decide what a faerie would wear.
    Angels: old depictions probably.
