If Palpatine had control of both the clones and the droid army, why didn't he just use them both to conquer the republic?

Instead of creating the elaborate scheme of using a war between them to gain power where so many things could have gone wrong, why not just use both to overrun the republic?

  • Is it better to be loved or feared? As a ruler it is better to be both, but it's incredibly difficult to control the hearts of many. If you are the conquering hero, then many people will automatically gravitate towards you. We saw this with 9/11 in real life.

He set himself up as a hero.

  • Because that way he has control of two key components of the field, and pretty much control of the outcome. He's also got a war to hide behind while he continues to draw support in from his position as chancellor, which was obtained legitimately, so it would be difficult to overturn. It also lets him maneuver the Jedi and others to positions where he can somewhat manage them. Launching an outright war could work, but there was the fact that it would not have been received well at all and resistance would have went up immediately. I dont think he had the power or money or support to be able to do that before.

  • Because he was surrounded by Jedi all too often, he would end up dead, needed to create massive chaos to rise to power

    • But he could have left Corascaunt, had the elite clones kill the Jedi and then conquer the galaxy.

    • if he just up and left they'd get really suspicious and Yoda and Obi-wan and the rest of the council were already sure he was up to something

  • He actually didn't have control of the clone army until he took control of the Republic. The were cloned specifically for the Republic, and, as such were condition to only respond to orders given by Republic officials.

That's why he needed the war. The only way he was going to have control over those clones, was by having control over the governing body they were conditioned to obey.

The war, and the fear it generated, were the tools he used to manipulate the senate into granting him the authority necessary to command those clones.

The droid army was simply a means to generate that fear, as they, alone, wouldn't have been sufficient to overthrow a Starbuck's.

  • To kill off those that could take him down, divide and conquer. Palpatine's greatest enemies were the Jedi and those in the Republic who wouldn't want it to be taken down. Since the Clone army had already been ordered, justing using the Confederacy to take the Republic down wouldn't have worked, as the Jedi and others would just go into hiding and return to fight back.
The easiest way to fool the Jedi would be to give them something to distract them, aka fighting the confederacy. They then could be exterminated easily by their clone allies in the middle of battle when the Confederacy (mostly just robots so they're replaceable) were a done deal.

This also gives him MORE control over the Republic because he's seen as a hero for beating the Confederacy, the Jedi are forgotten about.

    • Ancient history student here :P It actually wasn't an army of 300 vs 300,000. It was an army of roughly 300 Spartans, sure, but they actually had roughly 5,000 - 11,000 other Hellenic soldiers with them, so they were nowhere near as small an army as films like 300 make out. Modern estimates believe the Persian army had anywhere from 70,000 to 300,000 at the most. So it is still a good point, they were still hugely outnumbered, but not quite by 299,700 men :P
