Is there anyone that can legally marry a couple besides a religious figure?

I'm Atheist and I've been thinking when I get married I don't even want to step foot inside a church and I also don't want a religious figure to preform the marriage. I want a wedding that is respectful of my beliefs.

Is there anyone that can legally marry a couple besides a religious figure? Like a judge or other legal figure maybe? Just someone that is neutral and not a priest.

  • Sure, usually a judge or justice of the peace. My wife and I got married by a judge who looked and acted just like a 6'4" Santa Claus. He was great.

  • I went to a non-religious wedding and they had someone preside over the ceremony and marry the couple.
