Why can women legally choose not to be mothers, but men can't choose not to be fathers?

A woman may legally abort a child to opt out of being a parent, but a father cannot abandon the pregnant mother to opt out of being a father. Why does this legal contradiction exist?

  • That should change. I think the father should have an equal say in this too

  • Abortion has to do with bodily autonomy --- that a person has the right to make decisions about what happens to their own body.

A father can opt out of being a father. He doesn't have to actually be involved in his child's life, but if you're talking about child support, that has to do with the rights of the child to be adequately provided for.

So, these are two different issues.

And if a mother left the child with the father, she would also be required to pay child support.

    • If it is bodily autonomy, then the child therefore must be a part of the woman's body. Thus, the woman has full ownership and responsibility over the child.

Thus, the father has neither rights nor responsibilities over the child.

    • I see, then that would mean that she has no right to do anything with the fetus, zygote, or embryo, since it is not part of her body.

    • She has the right to remove something from her body.

  • Because you don't punish the child for the mother's mistakes. Even if she tricked you into getting pregnant - your child should not suffer for her choices. The child needs to eat, needs clothes to wear, needs a place to live, and if both parents are working, she will need a day care provider.

    • But women are allowed to kill it. For your comment to hold water you must think abortion should be illegal.

  • Well, people do that, so it isn't correct to say only women are allowed to opt out of being a parent.

  • Because rich dudes don't wanna pay more taxes for other guys' babies. But if you don't provide for children, hoardes of hungry, restless young men grow up and tear the world apart. In reality, all decisions are economic in the end.

  • If you don't want the child, wouldn't it be easier to try and get an abortion too?
Or wear a condom? Or try not to finish inside? Or take responsability for your actions?

  • Well... that is because they have to carry the child. It makes a lot of sense. Do you know the health risks of pregnancy? It is quite dangerous. When you can share that risk, you can complain that you don't have equal rights.

    • This line does not follow any kind of logic "as well as sole rights and responsibilities due to her legal ability to undergo abortion, then the man has no rights nor responsibilities."
      ***Yes you have responsibilities****
      ****No You have few rights****
Why is this so difficult to understand?

    • Her ability to have an abortion has nothing to do with your obligations.
