  • As far as I know, a terrace is on the ground floor (or more or less ground floor), like a porch, while a balcony is, well, a balcony (on a higher floor). At least that's how it is in German. And it also makes the most sense in English because "terrace" already has the Latin word "terra" (earth, ground) in its name.
