Why do one way flights cost almost as much as round trip tickets? For example I just looked for one way flights from Saigon to Chicago, and it's over $700. I can get a round trip ticket for about $900. Why isn't it just half of the round trip price? Also does anyone have recommendations on one way deals?

It's because airlines want to know they'll have that seat booked as soon as possible. The sooner they know they'll have the money, the sooner they can forecast other expenses and expenditures. Its the same reason that the further ahead you book your ticket, the less it costs.1
