Can someone explain the military to me?

I don't get it. So the military is the same thing as the army and is it also part of the marines or is the marines part of the army just not the military. And the navy is kind of like the military but it doesn't have the army? Or is the marines kind of like the military in its own branch? Is the airforce part of the army too? Or is the army its own branch from everyone else?

  • Haha. As an "Airman" (Air Force member)... (former now though, I'm out and a civilian again), Here's the deal. There are 4 "branches" of the military. Air Force, Marines, Army and Navy (And a 5th if you want to include Coast Guard). The Marines are under the authority of the Department of the Navy. However, the AF, Army and Navy are 3 separate branches. And they all have their own role in the military. Marines are toughest typically and most well trained because they are usually "first to fight"; Army provides a lot of combat support, and the Navy is the water guys. While the Air Force handles the skies. (Although the Air Force does have it's military police people called "Security Forces" who DO offer ground combat and police functions. Hope this helped. :)

    • I didn't know that about the marines being first to fight - like sent in first?

    • Most of this is correct but I will argue some things. First I will mention that the Coast Guard falls under the Department of Homeland Security. The others fall under the Department of Defense. The president can transfer the Coast Guard to the Department of Defense any time and Congress can do it in time of war.

As for first in, generally it is the Marines in force. But often, when a smaller force is needed, it will be Navy Seals or Army Rangers.

Although Air Power is normally from the Air force, both the Navy and Marines have their own air forces that travel on ships of the Navy. They are able to take planes to the fighting, which the Air Force often cannot do. As for the Marines taking their orders directly from the President, nope. Of course he is the Commander in Chief and can order any military person to do things, But he does not have the time to worry about giving the individual military members their orders.

    • Marines are under the authority of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, who is under the Secretary of the Navy, who is under the Secretary of Defense, etc. Probably the only Marines the president deals directly with are his security people. Of course he has the Secret Service, but for military protection the Marines assigned to him are his security force.

  • US military =
    - Navy = fight with aircraft carriers, and battleships
    * Marines = (soldiers, helicopters, tanks, planes) Usually kept on
Navy ships and used for attacking the land and as a
    primary invasion force.
    - Army = the main invasion force. Uses tanks, soldiers, helicopters.
    - Airforce = uses planes to attack ground and air targets.

  • The military is just the overall broad term for the armed forces

    The main branches are

    Army

    Navy

    Airforce

Marines ( which are kind of universal and are used by all 3 branches )

within each of these main branches there are other branches and units that operate within the main branches, like the rangers, Psi Ops etc.

  • Marines are part of the navy. Their job was initially to establish beach heads and penetrate from coastal areas after being dropped by landing craft. Marines are centuries old. Even in the days of the British empire when ships had masts and rigging every line ship had marine contingents on board for boarding parties and to scout inland. They're just sea based infantry. Although now they have more specialised skills and are used for commando roles

  • The military is like the NFL and the branches (Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard) are like the teams only they all play together rather than against each other.
If you want to get really technical then there are SF, Rangers, Airborne, Green Berets, and Delta for the army
Then Seals, Green team or JSOC, EOD 5 for the navy
And the list goes on and on. Hope this helps :)

  • The US military is made up of 5 branches Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Coast Guard.
The Army is the largest branch and are more commonly deployed overseas (mainly middle east as of 2015) and are mainly land air sea.
The Marines are used for more special ops and are mostly land and sea.
The Navy operate in water and are ships used for carrying and battles, they cary planes for the Army Marines and the Air Force.
The Coast Guard are used for guarding our borders and helping the Navy.
Last but no least is The Air Force. They are used in the air for combat and can be called in in a battle zone for air support.

  • The military is the larger organization. Army, air force, navy and marines are all different divisions of the military.

    • No, that's the navy. I think. No idea what the marines are. Don't have that particular branch where I'm from.

  • The military refers to all branches of the US or other countries forces that are available to fight more
