I don't get it. So the military is the same thing as the army and is it also part of the marines or is the marines part of the army just not the military. And the navy is kind of like the military but it doesn't have the army? Or is the marines kind of like the military in its own branch? Is the airforce part of the army too? Or is the army its own branch from everyone else?

Haha. As an "Airman" (Air Force member)... (former now though, I'm out and a civilian again), Here's the deal. There are 4 "branches" of the military. Air Force, Marines, Army and Navy (And a 5th if you want to include Coast Guard). The Marines are under the authority of the Department of the Navy. However, the AF, Army and Navy are 3 separate branches. And they all have their own role in the military. Marines are toughest typically and most well trained because they are usually "first to fight"; Army provides a lot of combat support, and the Navy is the water guys. While the Air Force handles the skies. (Although the Air Force does have it's military police people called "Security Forces" who DO offer ground combat and police functions. Hope this helped. :)1
