Writing cop charecters?

so in short im writing a story involving poliece officers and detectives, is there anyone here that could give advice so it doesn't diswade people in the profession.

things they need to do, who they answer to, things they can't do, if they came into contact with somethignunusual how would it be handled?

  • I'd say make them interesting by giving them a few quirks. Give them most of the standard cop features that you would imagine, but also throw in a couple "flaws". Like maybe they don't believe in all of the laws they enforce. Maybe they occasionally try psychedelics. Maybe they are mostly a good cop, but also a gambler, or maybe they have a need for speed, or maybe they operate in a "grey area" between legal and illegal and have dealings on both sides of the fence. Maybe they are corrupt and are trying to clean up their act.
