How do the US and Russia know they're bombing Isis?

This might sound like a dumb question.

When the US and Russia release Air Strikes how do they know they're bombing the right targets? And if it's that easy couldn't through bomb more targets?

  • There is normally a After Action report. The intelligence community or satellite would fly over that area to access the damage. This is also known as damage assessment.

Honestly no idea. Not a dumb question. Nobody, even journalists, really ever bother to ask the "dumb" (fundamental) questions, and there's no real transparency about it at all.

  • Ground intelligence. But Russia doesn't care about targeting ISIS, they are bombing all rebels, anyone holding a gun that isn't assad's forces. So their intelligence doesn't need to be nearly as good.
