So I have an extremely hard time with small talk. I was forced to grow up quick. I feel like I only know how to talk about deep things.
is this normal? does anybody feel the same way?

No, it's normal, but I have some experience with this.
Here's what you do:
Ask a lot of questions, and give back statements and commentary just enough so they don't feel like they're being interrogated.
As they speak, they will reveal "question points," which are things you can ask about.
People love it when you let them talk about what they know.
And as an interesting side-effect, I've noticed that I end up actually interested in their minutiae and learning a lot!1
