Guys, Dirty Science Question?

The average adult male is about 60% water. When water gets cold it freezes and when water freezes it expands, right. So why do guys' dicks shrink when cold?
I know the water in the body does not freez, but would the water still expand some when cold?

  • lol good question.

It's because our genitals are mostly skin and flesh and kind of "external" from our bodies. When they get cold, they shrivel up to get closer to the body so they stay warm and healthy.

We're all mammals, so our bodies are always generating heat. This prevents us from getting cold when it's cold outside our bodies, but it also means we have to eat a lot more than a cold-blooded animal like a lizard. When it's cold outside, a lizard slows down, and she'll only be more active when it's warm outside.

Guy's dicks shriveling up when it's cold is the body's response to being cold, just like shivering and goosebumps are... that's the body's natural response to staying warm.

  • because when it is cold, the body prioritizes blood flow to our core, and it is that blood which, for lack of a better term, inflates our dick.

past that, though? that water in us would have to freeze to expand, so the question seems pointless, no one is freezing their dick off, and if they are, they're probably dead already

  • the same way a snails eye goes in if you poke it, when its cold and you have something very sensitive just sticking out of your body, everything just seems to retreat for warmth and safety. :3

  • The sperm needs to be kept at a temperature lower than that of the body which is why they are in a nutsack outside of the body. When it gets cold, they rise up into the body to keep to a temperature that they're comfortable with.

I'm guessing (but am not certain) that a guys dick shrinks as a byproduct of the balls adjusting to the cold..

  • More like 78%. The water in the body never gets near freezing point so it never expands. If the core temperature drops under about 30 degrees Celsius then your dead. Water on expands at exactly 0 degrees Celsius so there's your answer. The core does take heat away from the extremities when it senses a temperature drop but i dont think the willy is counted. That's why you get frostbite on your fingers and toes first.

  • It's not water that fills our penises it's blood. Cold weather causes blood vessels to restrict and reduces blood flow. Therefore less blood going to the penis. Then bam smaller erection.

  • Because the penis and testes pull in closer to the body for warmth.
