Anyone know the bat and a ball maths question?

If not, a bat and a ball costs $1.10. If the bat costs $1.00 more than the ball, how much does the ball cost?

  • $0.05 cents dude
    Ball + bat = $1.10
    BUT the BAT cost more then $1.00 more then the ball

    $1.05 (bat) + $0.05 (ball) = $1.10 (bat and ball)

  • Let A = Bat
    Let b=ball

    a bat and a ball costs: $1.10
    A+b = $1.10

    the bat costs $1.00 more than the ball.
    A=b+$1.00

    Using substitution to find the price of the ball:

    (b+$1.00) + b=$1.10

    Applying PEMDAS

    2b+$1=$1.10

    Isolate the b; thus, subtract $1 from the left side ($1-$1) and right side ($1.10-$1=.10)

    2b=$.10

    Divide 2 from both sides

    b = $.10/2

    b= $.05

    The ball is 5 cents, but does this check with the stipulation

    $1.05+.05= $1.10

    Yes

    • I did algebra and checked my work.
      x + ($1.00 + x) = $1.10
      $0.05 + ($1.00 + $0.05) = $1.10

  • I got 5 dollar cents?
    I thought 10 cents at first but that wouldn't make sense because then the total would be 1.20$ and not 1.10$.

  • Isn't it $0.10? Unless the bat and ball costs $1.10 EACH. Then that wouldn't make sense.

    • I see it like this, if the ball costs 10 cents then the total cost will be $1.20, so that would be 10 cents for the ball and $1.10 for the bat, not $1.10. So the total would be 5 cents

  • I am also not good at maths, I actually disliked that subject but I'll try.

    The answer is 0.10$ is it right? or wrong?
