How to fix the toilet?

Basically the toilet was flushing fine and now it's constantly running if that makes sense. As in the water in the toilet keeps running as if it's being flushed. Because of this the water can't fill up aka can't flush so how do I stop that running in the toilet bowl

  • Take the lid off of the tank and look down in the bottom of the tank. You should see a flapper valve there. They are usually made of black synthetic rubber.

Your problem is that the flapper valve is failing to fully seat. This is permitting water to continuously leave the tank and go into the bowl. Since the tank never fills back up, the float valve at the top of the assembly never closes. This is why water is continuing to flow into the tank.

Reasons for the flapper valve to not seat:

The chain going to the flushing handle has gotten tangled or caught on other internal parts of the toilet.

There may be a bit of debris lodged in the valve seat.

On of the two arms on which the flapper valve pivots may have become detached from the valve assembly.

Do what you need to do to make the flapper valve fully seat.

Reply if this is not helping.

  • Jiggle the handle/trip lever to get the flapper to seal the pipe.
    -or-
Open the tank and check if the flapper (the one that covers the pipe connecting to the inlet) is seated properly on the flush valve seat.
    -and-
Check the string or chain that connects the handle/trip lever and the flapper. It may have detached.

  • You musta pinched-out one hellaciously big loaf the last time you dropped a deuce! Try eating less fiber and also add a little olive oil to everything you eat! Either that, or you'll haveta start popping in your back yard.

  • Open the tankard make sure the black rubber thing is over the hole. If it's not you'll see water flowing down it. Once you close that hook the chain back up to the lever. Or the chain might be bunched up holding the flap open. If that's the case just untangle the chain.

  • Its the flapper. Take off the back and you should see. Sometimes the chain will brake or come loose. It could be that

  • Make sure that the flapper seals the exit where the tank drains when you flush it. If it continues, then you might have to get a new flapper valve. And if that's the case make sure you shut the water of before maintenance it.

  • Yeah, it's your ball cock. You need to take the top off your cistern and see what's happening in there.
