What's your favorite Semitic language?

What Semitic language would you like to learn?

Note that Assyrian, Aramaic, and Phoenician language are used by the Semitic christians in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. They managed to survive through the centuries of Arabization, although, they have become a minority in their lands.

  • I learned something from your question. (Sorry I don't have an answer for you though.) I didn't know that the Christian peoples of Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq were Semitic peoples, and that their ancient languages were Semitic languages. In the West, when you hear someone say that someone is "anti-Semitic," you just assume they're referring to prejudice against the Jews. But that's too narrow, isn't it?

    • Yes, it's a very narrow point of view, Semitic is not just "Jewish", it's a group of related languages, including Arabic, Amharic and some other languages of Semitic people, regardless of their religion.

  • I don't really have a favorite one I think they are all pretty cool looking and sure to have interesting histories behind them.

  • I like the way Arabic sounds especially when a girl is speaking in it.
Hebrew has got to be the most unattractive language I've ever heard.
That's ironic since I'm technically Jewish.

  • Arabic. I've always had this fascination with middle eastern culture. Most natives speak Arabic, so it would be great if I could converse with them 😁

    • Yiddish is not Semitic, it's just a Jewish version of German.

    • The more you know

  • I don't speak any... but Hebrew seems to be more simple I believe...
