Bartholdi's work was commissioned by France. They aimed to place it at the entry of the Suez Canal but the Ottomans who reigned over Egypt back then didn't want it, thus it was offered to New York (or to the US, idk) There are two copies in Paris. One has been a long time in the Luxembourg garden but is now in some museum. The other is on the Ile aux Cygnes , near the Eiffel tower.
