Can someone get charged for making a false confession?

If a suspect is getting interrogated about a crime and apparently confesses and even tells accurate details. However, the cops then find out that's not the criminal but a composite liar that simply elaborated his story because he heard about the crime on tv and newspaper.

  • I think the most they could be charged for is obstruction of justice, which can be anywhere from a misdemeanor to a felony depending on the circumstances.

    • How about if he has no idea who the real criminal is and made that false confession for attention, for the heck of wasting their time?

    • How can he even know the details of the crime? Yes. Obstruction of justice. Can still be prosecuted.

What Girls Said 3

  • Yep, he or she would be deterring the police from finding the real criminal and messing with an official investigation.
