Why is society so ridiculously obsessed with status symbols?

seriously. it just seems like another way to keep us all divided.

  • When resources were rare, the person with those particular resources were powerful. For example, you wouldn't want to be facing an army with steel cannons and rifles if the only material you had was a wooden stick... On the other hand today resources are relatively plentiful. They are so plentiful that people throw them away everyday without even realizing it. I can go drive to the dump and pick up piles of discarded electronics and get more gold, silver, copper, etc. then most girls have in their jewelry box for free because people just don't have space to store it... It's junk... So now it's just a delusion for insecure people...

What Guys Said 17

  • Yes, the main purpose is to keep people focused on themselves, and on feeling superior to others. That maintains class divisions.

  • Depends if its status or prestige. Early human beings would wear jewelry to show their status, to show of what tribe they were and what rank they had. It todays world we do the same, it is only a problem when some of us feel better than others due to their status.

  • It's all in the name of attraction and divisions. True high status people create divisions to keep those less fortunate from being attracted to them for obvious reasons. Also at the same time try to attract those who are indeed in thier class of status. Then again.. high status talks and those less fortunate walk. Those who glam and are attracted to image related material who really can't afford it are dreamers with an agenda. Millionaires and billionaires who wear a 60,000,00 dollar ring is NOTHING. But for a person less fortunate , that's a lot of money 💰 So I would say. ; people are obsessed with a chance to become what they wish , or equally feeling divided against with no chance of ever becoming , which can turn a bitter tone against those more fortunate.

  • When European settlers came to the U. S. they gave up the rights and prestige that were often associated with their family names.

Thus, acquiring material goods became the new way to achieve status in the U. S.

  • We're a social species: it's hardcoded in our DNA that status is everything to us. Higher status means better food, better mates, more luxuries, etc...

for example: you walk around wearing gold, and are carrying the latest phone. you somehow think that ranks you above others. at least, that's what the people i've met do when they are like this.

Ahh, Douchebags! I wouldn't put society on a front like that, but yeah there are a lot of guys and girls that overcompensate for the sake of their ego..

  • It's called consumerism. Society wants us to keep buying the next best thing. Keeps the money flowing.

  • Because in general, the western society promotes insecurity and compensating for it by status symbols. Socialism isn't like it (and I think most eastern societies).

What Girls Said 8

  • two words: social capital.

being into the "right" things brings with it status and prestige. for example, i don't own a cell phone, and that's considered "weird" today, since most people's phones are practically attached to them.

within that group, you have your apple folks and your samsung people (... although i don't know if i'd be either, after what's been happening with exploding phones lol.

  • Because people need to feel like they are better than others. It's not limited to status symbols or money. People act like they are better because they do charity or are saving the planet or are more attractive.

  • what is ridiculous about it?

everything, from culture to education to mental and physical health, to abuse and abusive behaviours, to rate of failure and success, etc, change with economic and social statues.

economic/social status are very important. people should care about them much more.

Status symbols do not determine your worth or success. You do.

    • 1mo

You're so right. Unfortunately though too many people base their own self worth on validation from others. And societal queues, print/internet publications/advertisements, etc., still stereotype women as 'needing' a man for status or to 'complete' themselves.

An example, single woman at 50 is an old maid or that something is wrong with her, whereas a single man at 50 is either single by choice or just hasn't found the right woman yet.

@SuzynJane yeah, now they're trying to say that if you're single, you're disabled. Absolute madness.

  • A status symbol? You mean like having a pretty girlfriend or a wealthy boyfriend? It's basically a form of validation. Most people want to impress other people. A status symbol is like telling people you're successful without actually saying it to them.
