Because it's like being addicted, the habbit of being with that person and the chemicals that are released in the brain (especially dopamine which makes you feel happy) are suddenly taken away. The brain will fight againt it unconsciously and counsciosly because it used to get thous substances that made you euphoric. You can see the same simptoms in drug addicts when they stop using , they stop feeding the brain with certain chemicals which make them lose appetite and depression settels in, it's a bit different for everyone depending on the kind of person you are. Time and finding a new "hobby" or occupation that gives your brain a little bit of dopamine/seratonin would help a lot in the meantime. I hope you understand this, my English it's a little bit rusty.
Just give her some time she has got the wound she was not expecting it will get healed with time, we go through this phase because our daily life was affected by the that person and that daily routine get's disturbed if that person goes away from you now just give your friend some time and let her heal from this sad breakup just try to have a talk with her and encourage her if possible because the wound may get healed with time passing but the scar won't go away.
it happens all you can really do is let some time pass be supportive. Also try & do things you know she loves & for the most part won't say no too. That 1 friend who shows they care can go a long way you don't even know.

Maybe because a lot of time & energy that was put into a relationship feels just wasted & makes you feel depressed.
