Why an ex would want to be friends when he's dating someone else?

it's a toxic relationship, I sitll talk to him every three days or so. it's f***ed up.

  • Most likely to keep you as a back up, or at least to satisfy his ego that he COULD still have you if he wanted to. It could be to ease his quilt since this way it appears he is taking the high road and being civil after the break up. He might still want to be friends, but that isn't likely. Normally if you could still be friends then you wouldn't have broken up in the first place.

You have to do what is right for you. If you need to break all contact with him in order to move on, then you need to do that. This isn't about what he wants, this is about what you need.

    • we're not that close. so it's weird. it's just a trauma bond.

What Girls Said 2

  • There could be plenty of reasons... he wants to keep you around as a back-up, or he actually wants to be your friend, maybe he's just not sure at all what he wants... if you don't want to be friends with him, then try to make that clear. Cut some contact. Decide whether or not you need to move on and away from this guy.

  • It's hard to break old habits. If you've been together a long time, I can only imagine it could be a little hard to fully break off the relationship when you're used to talking to each other so much. And he might not really be in to the new girl so much.
