Exactly and that's how it should have remained. The whole living together for endless months or years is what is causing more to lose motivation towards marriage.
@Vesuvius87 I don't buy that. Getting laid has been happening outside of marriage for those same several thousand generations.Marriage is just a pain in the ass and many people shack up because they are too lazy to deal with it. However, shacking up is something useful too - you want to test drive your relationship before you make a life-long commitment. Would you spend $30000 on a car without driving it? Of course not. Well, marriage is lot more important (and expensive) than a car so you ought to test drive it as well. As for the subsequent motivation for getting married, once the couple feelsstable enough and recognizes the financial benefits of it, then they get married. When you are poor and your mate is as well, there is not much financial incentive as there is if you've got money.
Also, it may be more cost effective to shack up. My mom is shacking up because she gets benefits coz my dad is dead. She'd lose these benefits if she married her boyfriend. Same with him - he's a widower. So, because they are not married, they get more money and benefits and stay unmarried.
