Why are men expected to ask women out and pay for the date?

-She finds a guy attractive.
-He finds her attractive as well.
-Someone has to take the scary first step and risk rejection.
-He is pressured by society to take that risk.
-She is not.
-He could wait but that increases the chances that nothing will happen
-She does wait because that is what she’s used too
-He takes the risk for both of them to avoid that
-Now because he took that risk he is now pressured by society to pay for most of the date.
-Then to ensure that this relationship grows he is pressured to repeate this behavior

Can anyone help me understand why this makes sense?
Is the date not something both people wanted?
Is it an inconvenience for her to participate in something she wanted to begin with?
