  • Preliminary means the doctor believes something to be true, but additional tests and evaluations are necessary to confirm it or suggest something else.

    For example, suppose you have a fever. Preliminary diagnosis may be that you have early stages of the flu. But upon further evaluation, maybe you have a bad infection on your foot where you had a laceration.
