Sometimes when we crave love and affection we tend to be oblivious to the red flags that appear early on as the relationship starts to develop. Or maybe we ignore some of the red flags altogether in hopes that things will change or subside over time. Sometimes maybe our hopes and expectations are built up so high that it's not even possible for anyone to meet them. Misgauging the other person in the relationship is not always the case, nor is having low standards. You can't choose who you fall in love with, you can however decide how to handle it. People change constantly and not always for the better, remember circumstances also plays a big role. The reason why people started dating can be deep or shallow, if they started dating for shallow superficial reasons then "yes" misgauged is the more likely option. If there was a shallow connection and the "out of your league" was uttered by friends or family then low standards is more likely.
