When you're dating someone how often will you have to deal with them potentially choosing someone else over you?

Maybe you're just an option, they're seeing multiple people, or they happen to run into someone else and suddenly like them more. If it wasn't that serious then it wouldn't be a big deal but if we were actually in a relationship it would piss me off if they simply wanted someone else suddenly. I don't know hoe prevalent this is but I'm curious.
