Are you uncomfortable about hugging, with the risks of Covid?

Question

Yesterday I've given this friend some sweets because today is the Epifania, and in this tradition children and sometimes women receive sweets from the Befana (a sort of good hag/witch figure).
I've joked that she can't be a proper Befana without sweets and that's why I was giving them to her. She just laughed it off, said that joke's on me because she gets to eat all the sweets and even hugged me. She wasn't even wearing a mask (I was). So that wasn't really comfortable.

Oh I was uncomfortable hugging before this epidemic started (I'm not a touchy-feely person).

Covid just gives me a good reason to decline hugs now! I work in a hospital so we've been told no handshaking or hugs, not even our coworkers. So I politely tell people I don't want to risk making them sick by getting too close to them... that usually works.

Not at all. Well, I just don't think about it when I do it. Then if I try to think back on it, I'm like, well, already done, ain't it? In Italy, it is not just custom to hug but kiss on both cheeks, no? I had an Italian colleague who did that to me. I'd sort of half-peck his face when he did that to me. I can do that still. Well, I don't see moments of human affection as something less precious than a long life.

That's a shame. Well, maybe I'm biased being a bit old. I like to take some calculated risks here and there. A hug from a best friend is worth the risk as I see it. Plus I'm not that old -- I have some reasonable chance of survival, I figure, if I catch this thing.

Reminds me of hyenas all of a sudden. I saw this national geographic documentary on Hyenas. We might think of them as so ugly being scavengers, but they are so affectionate with each other -- beyond the isolation of cats and beyond the single-minded loyalty of dogs. But their tendency for affection and grooming each other often has the unfortunate tendency to spread diseases and wipe out entire populations. I see it as worth it. I might be a crazy one.

As for myself, I have always been ambivalent about those things. I like them on one side, but feel uncomfortable on the other.

I hug. It has more depth and meaning than words. Something about a genuine hug is warm and caring by nature. And if i get covid (again) because of a hug and it ends up killing me, then at least my friend, family, etc. Will know that i cared far more about them than some stupid virus.

I have only been close to 4 people since before Christmas. Three of them are family the other a close friend. I had no need to hug any of them. As for the general idea of hugging during this time of covid I don't do it.
