I'd say temporarily leave him.
Keep the very basic communication but don't contact him.

As in don't initiate a call or conversation, don't engage in an activity either mental or physical with him, let him feel that you're avoiding him but in an indirect way, where he can't prove it that you're avoiding him yet it is evident that there's like a distance or a pause or whatever you may call.

In a way, that should make you see how he will treat you when you come again as if nothing happened, and when you come again be neutral. As in not happy or excited being around him, but as if he is just another good person among the good people that you won't mind.

At some point later after the leave you'll see if he doesn't change and just remains the same when you avoided him or if he feels worried or careful to your actions.

Usually after leaving someone, it means you gave them space to think and sort things out. So you both should have a clearer picture after coming back again after that 'leave' or 'break'.

How long shall the leave be, not sure but around 7-10 days I'd say, or maybe 2 weeks if you can endure.

And how to come back: See what things you can comment on his personality, prepare a speech and here I mean the thoughts and ideas and then simply tell him if you both can have a talk, so it sounds natural. When you talk, provoke him thoughtfully such as saying a general idea or representation of what you want to say but don't give enough details. So he ends up needing to ask to know more, or just ignores to listen to the end.

Then go on and mention something about your most important goals in life and what makes you see them as the most important and your firm perspectives and beliefs about them.

If you feel you are not with the right person.. then that's not a definition of a partner.

You may make it clear to him in a way that you're not thinking about him anymore as a lover. And you don't know, you might hear from him, maybe he loves another girl and didn't want to be rude to you.

So check your compatability in general thoughts and ideas then go deeper to personality and firm beliefs, so you see again if this love is one-sided or how. And finally, allow him to speak freely so you hear {from him}.

As I said, make it clear to him. Either say I'm giving up on you as a lover, and don't add a lot and go silent. Expect him to go on and say somsthing you maybe didn't expect or maybe nothing. Or ask him directly what he thinks about this matter -you liking him- and come mentally prepared and let him see that you're calm and collected so he can be at ease and let you know what he really thinks.

No exceptions. It's to late to be afraid of losing a friend since that have passed long time ago.
