When someone quits a job or is fired why do other coworkers try to pretend they never existed?

One of the waitresses quit this past weekend due to an anxiety attack. Some of the waitresses said she was using it as an excuse, some people just refuse to acknowledge what happened. I have anxiety and attacks so I know how it can be. But back to my question. Why do workers refuse to acknowledge or pretend like former co-workers never existed instead of saying they we're a good person or worker?
