What advice/warning would you give to a beginner interested in investing in the stock market?

I would go with mutual funds at first. The reason being, your money is spread out over a lot of stocks in a mutual fund. That was you avoid "individual stock risk". Other advice would be to not take "stock tips" too seriously. Most of the time people giving you the "tip" don't know what they are talking about. And if someone tells you to "put all of your available money into one stock" because that stock is going to take off! Avoid that like the plague. Sometimes that happens, but most often it is BS.

-Only put money that you are 100% willing to lose in, don't put life savings in.
-Do not REACT to rising or falling stocks, you are supposed to PREDICT based on competitors/similar markets/real world events etc.

Learn as much as you can. And spend a year playing one of those stock trader games that take results based on the real stock markets. That way you'll get to see how easy it is to loose a lot, and difficult to make any serious money, without losing actual real world money.

Use dollar cost averaging and diversify. Maybe look at ETFs first.
