And the country’s disdain for colleges is troubling.

Stats from when? The over 40-80 year old college graduate or the current up and coming generation with a fairly sizeable number of 22-30 year old college graduates who are struggling to get anything other than minimum wage?
Certainly the best paid jobs require a college education but they also require that you do well at college, study certain fields and maybe come out with a masters.

What's Your Opinion? Sign Up Now! It may be a skilled job, but you're definitely not going to learn it in college! Try taking a college course on HVAC installation and repair. Not happening. In the space of year or two of technology training and OJT, people are earning a solid income with ZERO student loans.
As for "unskilled" labor, who plans on doing that all their lives? Those are the minimum wage jobs we all tell you about that definitely do NOT need to be paid $15/hr. They're also the jobs people take starting out in the workforce or if they're transitioning to another job. Either way, getting paid min wage was never ever meant to be a "living wage". People were always expected to move on from min wage jobs, especially since most are temporary work hours anyway.
Half the country is unskilled buddy. And while tech schools are great, stats are pretty clear: college degrees means more bennies throughout your life.
Is THAT why so many young people have $60K-$150K student loans hanging over their heads? Because they get more bennies? How does that help anyone with a degree in art history, or music? Or a liberal arts degree (whatever that means)? Or one in European political science? Yeah... I can see most of those people being hired for huge sums of $$. Probably take them 200 years to pay off their student debt!
If the only jobs available are unskilled, blame liberals for inviting foreign labor into the US and taxing business to the point it's cheaper to export the jobs and re-import the products. Your President is planning on doing just that too! Hope y'all enjoy it, especially those who voted for the jerk. The last I read, Trump had the lowest unemployment rates in our nation's history.
Yeah student debt is a dangerous bubble, but it’s not keeping individuals in poverty. My college loan is a 6% interest rate. Hard to find that good of an investment.
And the jobless college students you speak of are a minority to middle and upper class productive citizenry. Which plumbers are no doubt apart. They make good money.
But wouldn’t a more educated population be better? Then masters and phds would be more numerous right?
It's not feasible man, in the United States the cost of college is so ridiculous and people are saddled with debt that can't get cleansed with bankruptcy.
I literally can't afford college myself and would have to go into debt. I can afford a few nice things here and there, like my PlayStation 5, but college is fucking ridiculous. Nnoooo waaaay, I would need to very deliberately get a sugar mama to support my college expenses.
But it’s because the govt keeps pulling back finding for state colleges. And greed. Deans get paid millions.
