No, I've always been able to resign. But, I've been awfully close a for too long.

I remember being utterly miserable, even pacing back & forth in the dark at home, utterly worried I'd be terminated despite my best efforts to raise my results to acceptable level. Good news was that I was raising my numbers successfully, but they were never (in that role in that specific company) anywhere close to acceptable, despite my efforts that were clear to all. (I was 1st to the office & last to leave, even working in to the late night, enough to meet the office-cleaning people a number of times). I even bought and brought my own large cans/bottles of coffee, instead of taking the company's provided drinks, to reduce my cost to the company, since I was so guilty for my incompetence. It was miserable.

I have never been fired - although I might because the business I work for now is in postponement status and has lost money-.

I am on the process of discussing new job offers though.

However, I have quit in the past, but that is different.
