Well, usually when you make a mistake, you get some kind of punishment. Maybe screamed at by supervisor. And if you make a HUGE mistake, they can fire you.But to quit because of a mistake you made is a bit unorthodox...
i made a mistake that made me look very incompetent and its very embarrassing.

Well, but the new job will find out about that mistake you've made. All they have to do is call your previous job...
they won't call. they don't have the time to do that for every applicant
They will if you will be seriously considered. That's a standard procedure.
