The ascension of woman was a series on recently (well, the last 12 months), it was on BBC4. It is about women obviously but it's really interesting, especially the Chinese Empress. I have just watched a documentary about her specifically but it wasn't as good as the BBC one and I can't remember the name of it wither. Something like China's Forgotten Emperor or similar.
