Today's Music: Good or Bad? If so, how can we improve it?

It seems a lot of today's music is uninspired drivel. They don't sound as good as they used to be. Or maybe it's my biased nostalgia. If it is the case that music today sucks; What can we do to improve it? What do you look for in music?

  • There's music being made to every single genre ever created. Obviously not the same genres are in the mainstream, they change through time, but the type of music you like is probably being made right now. You just have to find it.

  • Mainstream music was always kind of bad, go back 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago, the disposable pop music wasn’t what’s remembered by the large majority (except maybe the 80s because of the nature of the musical era). Nostalgia is a really powerful distorter of what the world was actually like, where we minimise the bad and maximise the good. You’ll find that those who are steeped in their own nostalgia and look at another eras music as superior are often unwilling to scratch below the surface to find the cutting edge as well as ignore musical genres they’re unfamiliar with. In my mind the musical scene in this decade is objectively a lot better than the last, but a lot of it isn’t as exciting or memorable which can seem like such a downer. we’re also going through a sort of musical revolution, where with the advent of soundcloud, YouTube and bandcamp the traditional musical institutions are becoming more obselete. This shows that we now celebrate authenticity to a greater degree than past generations. Another aspect is that the majority of the iconic music currently being created is either hip hop or electronic based, which can be unfamiliar for a lot or people. The truth is that there is just as much good music being created as ever you just might not appreciate it and might have to go searching.

  • Bad. The only way to fix it is to commit global genocide and move to mars and create genetically superior humans with refined movie and music tastes. We can teach them what's good music and what isn't and then teach them to be artists.

  • It's different. That doesn't mean bad. But what is popular now may very well be dead in a few years. But truly, objectivity good music never dies.
