Whats your view on body image involvimg the media?

Lots of people believe that magazines or movies can negatively affect someone's self confidence. Do you agree or do you think the media isn't the thing behind this?

  • Hmm difficult one. Humans are sexual driven entities. So the media is using that for economic reasons cause humans will buy it.

The models are chosen because most of the time they do have a body what most man or women feel attracted to.

However just realize that it is almost unrealistic what the models need to do to get that. Also with earth population compared to how many people working for magazines television etc is not realistic. So if people feel offended or they feel ugly. Then it's the pressure from society and there surroundings to blame.

My point is. That people in general think it's importend how they look like. But do not realize that there are lots of people feeling attracted to a individual just because who they are.

So about your question I can see why people losing confident. But I do think they should look in a mirror and start loveing them self.

  • I think it can have an impact, but that more parents should shape their children’s self image as they’re growing and monitoring their exposure rather than letting it go unchecked like many seem to

  • To an extent yes. It can even warp someone's view on what beauty is. It used to be a point my wife's ex would use to make her feel bad about her self he'd call her fat compared to a such and such actor or whoever was on the front of a magazine. So now she's still a bit uneasy around me, she goes through moment's where it drags on her confidence. It's really sad she's beautiful and she's far from fat, in fact sometimes I worry about her weight.

  • I think social media does a lot worse.

It gives “normal people” a chance to pretend they’re celebrities by posing in front of a beach with a cocktail in their hand for 4 hours.

It distorts what real life actually is, and because it’s a platform dominated by “normal people” it assumes the idea that everyone should be doing what they do. Reality is, they’re fake and lucky.

  • Self-consciousness is a deep-rooted and complex thing to deal with or experience. Very few people considered attractive by others consider themselves actually attractive. Personally I don't believe the media causes this, I think it's just a common thing that people experience.

  • Yes I think it is in some degree. Just look at Brad Pitt in Fight Club e. g. How much time would I need to invest to get such muscles? Are you kidding me? I ve got a life and a job. Women in general know that normal men usually dont look that way. There might be 1 or 2 herw on GAG but 99% dont. Same with female actors. Its their job to have a good body. And then the porn industry. Who goes for like 6 different positions in one fuck? Most people know that reality is different from what they see on screen but for younger people it may cause insecurities about their own bodys

  • It's shameful. Let people be happy with themselves. Excellent question

  • I believe that, if you are weakminded enough to be affected by that, you deserve it.

    • What you described is not anorexia because you don’t *have* to be slim to have that mental illness. It is MENTAL after all, meaning it has to do with your brain.

You obviously know nothing about mental illness or eating disorders, so I’m going to end this here. Thanks for reminding me of just how ignorant our society is!

    • Yeah sure.

  • the media is driven by advertising

  • I don't see how the media can have that impact. If you're insecure because of what the media portrays, then that's on you for being weak minded.
