What do you think after reading this?

YOU ARE NOT A MONUMENT

You were taught to be
A monument
Put your best face forward
Never cry, Never wince
Hold your head up
Even amidst the ruins
You were taught to
Paint over all your cracks
And brighten up the
Calligraphy
To be a site, people
See and applaud
"Men don't cry," they said
"Not like girls"
And now,
You are a monument
With years that have
Turned into bricks
Updates:
Tears* ... Not years* sorry for the typo

  • Halucinator's Review:
The poem seems like it has a deep meaning. It shows how boys are made to grow up in a society and how they are expected to behave. A man is compared to an emotionless monument made up of bricks that can't express its feelings. The way the poet has written "Men don't cry like girls" represents the general stereotypes towards masculinity of a man. That's a statement that every boy or man has heard at some point of time. A man is expected to act tougj and valiant even in the worst situation ever. He is the only one who has to support himself and give strength to others. He has to repaint himself i. e. heals his own wounds. The way poet has written "You were not a monument. You were taught to be a monument" signifies that a man isn't emotionless from the start. The society makes him an emotionless piece of hard and rough bricks.

Overall, I would say that this is an amazing poem. Kudos to the writer.

Just few lines were dull but overall the whole poem is nice.
