Is Hollywood industry exploiting women for Nudity, in the name of performance or art?

I feel most of nudity in movies these days is sleazy and for men. I feel that it is different than before.

  • I wouldn't call it art but I wouldn't call it exploitation either. Those shouldn't be the only choices.

  • "These days" is a stretch. In the 80s, everything had tits in it, to, well, titillate. And the early to mid-90s were happy to use the promise of sex to sell movies.
So I see nothing new... and in may ways, modern movies have backed away from explicit nudity (where as subscription services have picked it up. Pay for that STARz package and get tits!)

But even in the most extreme era of movie production, there were movies with nudity that was just banking on easy sex-attracted cash, and nudity that actually mattered to the plot/subject matter, sometimes as art, and sometimes as just part of the greater whole.

In the end, I don't see any nudity, be it for titillation, for art, to tell a story, or to appeal to the "sex sells" narrative, as "exploiting" women, because the fact is, the actresses know if it will be required or not before shooting, and have the power and ability to negotiate, how much, how long, in what context, even who is allowed on set. Or, if they can't see themselves doing it, they can get a body double, or simply not take the roll.
So they are not lacking a say on this.

And if the male body were in demand the way a female body is, there would be just as much male nudity. The fact is, women, gay, straight, or bi, are (generally) more comfortable with a nude/partially nude woman, than a nude/partially nude man. And men, straight, bi, even gay surprisingly, tend to be more comfortable with female nudity than male nudity.

When gay men and straight women are more comfortable with female nudity in films than male nudity, I think that says a lot... and considering you can alienate an audience with male nudity (which is silly. I won't run from a theater or demand my money back because I saw a dick...), where as most members of an audience are, at worst, impassive about female nudity, the fact is, if you want to put a naked body on screen for any reason, art or titillation, you are better off picking a female character... and the actress willing to commit to that role has a job, because she chose it.

  • Yes, clearly nudity is being used in both television and film to create headlines and get views. It often has no artistic merit whatsoever. I wouldn't go so far as to say that it is always exploitative because many actors and actresses choose to sign on the dotted line when they certainly don't need the money. People who are both vain and fame hungry are often not above exploiting themselves for those ends.

  • Yes very much so... Sex sells well... My thing is these actors and actresses are ok with it... At least they do it... Then I hear some of them saying how objectified they feel. They have the option to say no... Yes that is career ending. But sticking for what you believe is better than money... Right?

  • Movies with a lot of nudity are often targeted towards men...
Movies with a lovably male lead are targeted towards women...
There's no issue with that, it's just because of their target audience.

  • There is absolutely no real need for nudity ever. Its either to entice, thrill or shock people. I think it is hilarious how some women say it is empowering

  • If a woman. or man freely chooses to enter the Porn Industry there is no actual "exploitation" in my opinion.

  • Most of the time it seems that if nudity is involved in a mainstream film it is to get viewership and create attention

  • Well, I , mean, the actresses are clearly agreeing to do the nude scene, so it's not really exploitation.

  • It is entirely possible to do it for artistic vision, but 9/10 it's just fan service.

  • It doesn’t matter what it was for, they signed a fucking contract to do it and could quit the film production at any time.

  • It sure seems like it. A lot of men don't like the nudity either, just to remind you. I mean... there is nothing weirder than watching a movie with your mom, a platonic friend who is a girl, etc. that you have never seen before, and the BAM out of nowhere, for no reason, a bunch of titties.
I love the show game of thrones but I pretty much watch it all alone because that much nudity makes my girlfriend uncomfortable so she doesn't watch the show, and I sure as hell don't want to watch it with friends or family members either because mist of mine are female and that would just be uncomfortable as hell

    • friends are fine. mom, not so much. ii remember packing my shit to go back to school after a break and game of thrones was on. i wasn't really paying attention, but my mom came down and i stopped what i was doing and walked right the fuck out... i took no chances :D

  • Women are all too happy to show their tits on screen for men in movies. No one is holding a gun to the heads of these women. So not our fault.

  • Cheryl Tunt from Archer is an idiot, but a Millionaire.
Pam Poovey from the same show is like a Cheetah and a Grizzly Bear combined.
Malory Archer from the same show is a CEO of a spy agency with a net worth of 4 million dollars.

Penny from the Big Bang Theory is a former waitress/aspiring actress who is now a pharmaceutical sales rep married a physicist and is totally doming him.
Bernadette from the same show is competitive, rich and powerful.
Amy from the same show is a brilliant neuroscientist.

    Lagertha is a Viking Queen.
Aslaug manipulated a Viking KING in order to rise to power.

    Sookie Stackhouse - Fairy Killer
Pamela Swynford - Vampire Killer, rich

I could go on, but I think you got the point.

Also, there is SEX. A LOT OF SEX involved in each and everyone of these TV shows, with all of these characters.

  • So many movies have unnecessary nudity these days. The boobs in Deadpool was so unnecessary. So is the cussing. Its a good movie but they shouldve stuxk with PG13 for it. And in that horrid comedy 50 Shades of Black, the dick scene was so unnecessary. Lots of movies just throw stuff in these days cause they know people like it

  • I wouldn't say it's exploitation as long as the actress in question was perfectly okay with it and wasn't just pressured into doing it, but yes, a lot of nudity, male or female, in movies nowadays is often purely to garner more attention from certain target groups.

  • Honestly, men have been shirtless for no reason in movies for years. Now the they're dragging women into it too. I don't see any reason for nudity in movies. I don't think it adds any artistic value.
