Do you think video games can be the cause of violent behavior?

Just as the title says. Please elaborate on whichever option you choose! The video game violence debate has been going on for so long, and I'm interested to see other people's take on it.

  • It's only a debate because there's people who refuse to look at the research. The subject has been studied to death in the past decades and not a single one of them has found a single link between video games and real world violence

  • No, I don't think video games cause violent behaviour because it doesn't. There are no studies proving this. I've ran over prostitutes, killed cops, massacred zombies, and made my Sims drown by removing the ladder, and I've never even been in a physical altercation in my life, nor do I ever want to be in one.

  • As you pointed out this debate has been going on for awhile... The benefit to that is that a ton of research and experimentation has been dedicated to this question.

All that research determined that there was no significant link between violent video games and violent real-world behavior

  • Well in my opinion the games or programmers are not really at fault here.. it is the player/players that can go a bit overboard as wanting to be the best on them and it gives them that game edge and that is good.. but also many times they do not always win and as in anything someone always comes along that is just as good or maybe better then they thought.. and after a bit of time the player can get very huffy... take care now

  • OF COURSE! Although fans will reject this notion and shift blame elsewhere in defense... as we see in the news.
Many other influences contribute as well
    family patterns past/present
    being cornered by life
ISES, Supremacy, racial, other wannabe power groups to impress/emulate
getting even with types abusive in past
lack of a hero that has no clay feet

  • No. I think if the person is already violent they will try to mimic video game violence in reality. But if you're not a violent and normal person, you will be able to determinate between reality and fiction.

Ryan Gosling threw knives at kids on school playground after seeing Rambo, but that's because he was clearly mentally ill.

  • video games alone aren't going to cause violence... i think a person has to already have a propensity for violence in them. the video game may inspire them to carry out an act they see in the video game or something along those lines

  • They could negatively influence the rare psychopath. I play violent games all the time and I'm fine. I'll probably get a lot of hate for this but as much as I enjoy games like GTA etc these guys need to understand when they make these things that they're creating culture, well what kind of culture do you want to help create? Things like LA noire, I can get behind more and at least the dude is actually somewhat likeable.

  • Does breaking a controller count? Though I suspect my mum gets road rage more often than I rage quit break controllers... Maybe they should ban cars while they're at it (solve congestion, drive bys, vehicle violence and pollution all in one).

  • HahahaHahahaHahahaHahahaHahahaHahahaHahahaHahahaHahaha... No... I've been playing voilent games since I was like 7, I'm afraid of killing spiders or other bugs for that matter. For god sake I'm afraid of dogs somehow! Although punching someone isn't something afraid to do but well violence doesn't go togheter with rationality or logic so, and there is nothing to gain from harming anybody... You are stupid if you inflict harm upon anyone.

  • People were violent before video games existed. Heck, as soon as someone could pick up a rock or stick they've been killing each other.
    People are naturally violent.

  • It does the complete opposite, actually. Studies have shown that during periods where a popular violent video game was released, there was also a reduction in violent youth crime in that time as well.

  • Nope. Study after study after study has shown there's no relationship of causation between video games and violence. Just because someone who is already mentally unstable, just so happens to play video games, and then commits a crime, that doesn't mean video games are to blame.

The reason people keep pointing to video games is because it's an easy out. They don't have to face the fact that the issue is deeper and more complicated than surface level bs. Saying "it's the video games fault" gives a simple scapegoat for the media and politicians to point to and blame.

  • I myself have urges to kill people or do violent things while also being a sadist and possible sociopath but I'd need diagnosis. Anyway, I've never thought to myself during or after playing a game. After playing Grand Theft Auto, Skyrim, Fallout, Assassins Creed, Call of Duty, etc. I've never thought "Man, maybe I should kill someone or rob a bank." because of video games. My problems mainly come from my childhood not video games. It's the kids environment and how he was raised. Sometimes genetic but not often when it comes to violent behavior.

  • There is no sens when people ask such questions. It's a video game ! why would it make me violent? Have you ever thought about bad parenting? where the parents are fighting all the time? That is one tiny example. I grew up with violent bloody video games and i was in war and am not one bit violent, there is absolutely no connection between video games and violence in real life. If it's true ! Well ! me and my brother should had slain over 3000000 people for the last month but the reality is none of us even hurt a fly.

  • If a person ends up violent because of a video game it means either they weren't instilled with better morals as a child or they are mentally ill

  • There's been like two crimes where the perpetrator said they were influenced by a video game. Even so, you have to be a little unstable to make that decision in the first place.
I'm pretty sure they've already done research into this and found there's no correlation.

  • It possibly could, but it wouldn't be the number one factor. I'd think it'd be the persons environment or the environment they grew up in. The person could also be psychopath or sociopath depending.
