Why are female gamers referred to as "Gamer Girls"?

I personally think that there's no such thing as a Gamer Girl, and that we're all just gamers - It's not like Gamer is a gendered term, and therefore you have no need to specify the gender. But seeing people continue to refer to us as "Gamer Girls" makes me wonder - Why do people choose to specify it?

  • Gamers are gamers. Never referred anybody to being a Gamer Girl before, more have I ever heard it mentioned before.

Except perhaps from losers maybe, like it's important to let everyone know there's a real life Girl playing a video game *GASP!* And she might show us her badonkadonks or might date them... Like some mythical quest item they stumbled upon. If they get you on their side then maybe they can use your gender against their enemies by proclaiming to challenge their foes to a duel and their secret weapon will be "The Gamer Girl!!"

Their foes, never having the ability to talk to girls in their school, let alone being challenged on the game they seek refuge in, to face the possibility of being beaten, suddenly lose their focus at the sound of a girl on a mic... And lose.

To one of the rare any mysterious Gamer Girls!!!

    Dun

    Dun

    DUUUNNNNN!!!

Ya know, despite almost half of gamers in the world ARE female and play just as much or more sometimes... It's because most females who play online tend to not say their gender or avoid using Mics because of the goons on the internet.

When one shows up, suddenly it's not about the game anymore, it's about you.

    Because Boy Gamers are idiots.

Yes, I play games, and yes I'm very good at them. No I don't do the above and never have.

    Why?

Because I'm a Man Gamer. 馃槑

  • They say there's a difference between being a "Gamer Girl" and being a girl who plays video games.

The "Gamer Girl" label is primarily at this point applied to girls like in porn who don't really play the game and just try to take sexy photos and pose like they like games in order to appeal to guys and gain clout. There's actually a lot of porn where a girl "plays a game" and she's "So into the game" she's ignoring her boyfriend and he just like slips her clothes off and has sex with her while she games. I guess the point is supposed to be that it would be really hot to have a girlfriend that into gaming? And also sex.

But the thing people don't always understand is most girls who say they like games actually like games and aren't trying to seem cool in front of guys. Plenty of girls actually enjoy games. And it doesn't matter what kind of games they're playing because that's not what makes you a "real gamer"

"Oh what do you play? Facebook games?" No. But I shouldn't have to list off what I own and what I play to "prove myself"

  • Probably for the same reason I've heard people talk about "female engineers" and the like. It is seen as an area where you expect the "engineer", or the "gamer" in this case, to be male, because it is seen, correctly, as being a male dominated area. So people think that it's important to distinquish the gender when it is not the expected one, as in the case of "female engineer" or "male nurse" to give more information that may or may not be pertinent to the subject being talked about.

  • because they are rarer then male gamers ergo they are reffered to as gamer girls to distinguish them from the predominantly male gamers. Its not sexism, its not discrimination, its just a matter of prominence or lack their of, of female gamers.

    • My problem with the "they're rarer" argument is that some sources suggest that this dofference in rarity is less than 10% in terms of the gaming community. :/
Also, I never said it was sexist or discriminatory - I just don't see the point in it.

    • Show All
    • Ahhh, I see. Thank you for clearing that up for me, then. (:
I usually go by the basis that mobile gamers aren't "true" gamers, but oftentimes when I do that, I'm met with responses like "Who are you to judge what other people game on?", "A true gamer wouldn't see others as lesser gamers for playing mobile games", and the most annoying one "You're just trying to make yourself look good for attention", hence why I tend to forget that fact in the statistics. (:

Ah, I see. Yeah, too many people throw "sexism" and "discrimination" around nowadays. 馃槀

    • Yeah, its a difference in what one considers a video game. And yes most people jump to the conclusion that its discrimination and or sexism instead of the more likely scenario of it being a different definition or perception of the what ever it is they are discussing.

  • It's because every gamer guy dreams of having girlfriend who plays games with him. And its very rare to find one. And also its pretty dominated by men. But recent years has shown quite a large growth in gamer girls.. Also it sounds cool saying it.. Gamer Girls. GG. Good game :D

  • There's a cultural implicit gender default in certain nouns. Eg, fire fighter vs woman fire fighter, or midwife vs male midwife. That default is being slowly eroded by cultural shifts, but many elements of the press and popular media are still yet to get the message. Unless the gender is needed for some particular context, call people out on it, and it will change over time.

  • Gaming is known as more of a guy thing, and its rarer for girls, plus it's built up a bit of a sex appeal which makes guys want to differentiate it more

  • There's an Adam ruins everything that explains the gender gap in video game culture. Girls who play video games are seemingly a rarity in society, so when a girl finally does openly play video games, men tend to put emphasis on that because it's pretty rare (at least in our minds). I've been with girls who don't even touch video game consoles or have a PC or anything, and that's perfectly okay, but a girl that could beat the shit out of me in Bloodborne is probably a keeper.

  • Because when gaming was invented and even as it is now, it's still a male-dominated activity. I think the term nowadays it's mostly used as a joke or as a derogatory term towards cam hoes on Twitch who only get famous for showing their tits live on stream

  • I don't know i have a younger sister. Me and my brother grew up with video games. For the most part we always allow her a turn and never push her away when we play. I really thought that she would play as often as us. Maybe girls and guys game differently?

  • Because it feels like you are needles in a haystack as there used to be so many less female gamers than there are now and it still feels that way, and a girl being a gamer automatically makes you more attractive

That's my guess of how it came about anyway

  • Although the term probably arose due to majority of gamers (seemingly) being male, I still think the unnecessary division by gender, even if minor, is silly. Those who use the term to describe themselves reek of attention-seeking, lol. Gaming's one of the best hobbies, I personally have a hard time believing anyone with an age in the two-digits would genuinely be completely disinterested in them--such people probably don't like sports either, which I would also find laughable.

  • My two cents:

Female Gamer- A female who plays videogames and is comfortable with who she is.

"Gamer Girl"- A female who plays games and tries way too hard to mimic what she thinks male gamers are like.

  • Because most gamers are men. Gamer Girl is a really specific person though, I feel like. When I hear that term I automatically think of a girl that's way too hot to be a nerd, probably on Twitch in her bikini

  • i see your point. gamer is not gender specific but i think traditionally the idea of a gamer has been of a male.

the specificity isn't necessary though you are right.

  • Because gaming is perceived as a primarily male hobby (despite not being grounded in statistical reality). The term "gamer girl" is a touch patronizing. Although it's not necessarily a condescending term, as it's thrown around a lot and any mention of it could be harmless, the idea of a gamer girl is often fetishized. So that's not fantastic.

  • Maybe because they game and are females?

Sometimes I feel like they are over exaggerated. I mean, they are humans too and are usually treated like a class apart. I do love a woman who prefers to buy games to a lipstick, but then again, she is a female inside and I think she should not let that go.

And to all the people on social media who conceptualized gaming girls wearing low neck tops, or holding the joystick nude or topless, it doesn work that way duddeees!

  • I feel like for me, the term was more to separate you from other girls, non cool, non gaming, girls. Not to set you apart from other gamers. Otherwise it would be "girlygamer", or something.

  • Because it's a stereotype for girls. Guys think that "Gamer Girls" are hot, because the larger economy of gamers are based on the male side. And guys who play video games find it really hard to find a partner that is the same, without being attracted to a guy.

  • Because in all my games its filled with caucasian 13 year old kids cussing and calling me names over the headset online. Then once in a blue moon you hear a female its just like "Oh sht forreal is it really a female on here for once?"

  • I totally agree with you

I'm not sure why the term "Gamer Girl" came to life but my best guess is that because video games were originally aimed at boys and girls are supposed to play with dolls or something

  • Probably in the same way this site is named girlsaskguys. com

But gamer girls are hardly disliked, although unrealistic images of them exist, as wubblubbadubdub outlined.

  • Gamer girls are show offs and they show more cleavage than their actual gameplay. People don't normally know them for their gaming skills if you know what I mean..

Female gamers are actually good, commendable gameplay, sometimes they are not skilled either but they don't feel the need to put a video console to cover their boobs

Gamer girl: "Oh watch me play this game, Follow me on Instagram and twitter. Also their twitch comments filled with thirsty fanboys and haters"

  • I mean, I agree that gamers isn't (or shouldn't) be gendered, but I've always heard of gamer girls AND gamer guys, like when people would talk in class about gaming, they would say "Well I'm a gamer guy as well" or "Hey don't worry dude I'm somewhat of a gamer girl myself" so I just see it as a title not an insult

  • Because it's still oh so "shocking" that a girl could actually, genuinely be interested in games because it's TOTALLY something ONLY guys do!!!
I dunno, either people are still stuck in this mindset that gaming is only for guys, or there are girls who want to distinguish that they're girls who play video games just to get brownie points. Personally I just refer to myself as a casual gamer, I don't see the point in using "girl" when talking about myself and gaming because it's 100% irrelevant to my interest.
