Why did people hate on Star Wars the last Jedi?

I watched it last night and thought it was a well made movie that also did a good job keeping it apolitical. Yet many people say that it was bad. Does anyone know why? I’m just curious. It even has a 7.4 rating which is pretty low for such a big movie. Why did people hate on Star Wars the last Jedi?

I am glad to hear you liked it. It gives me hope that I may enjoy this movie despite what everyone else says. :)

  • Politics aside, the MC was a Mary Sue who mastered the force in 3 days just cause and Leia learns it in space somehow when she should've died about a few seconds. The two side characters weren't the best and Luke's death was poorly handled too. The movie reeked of SJW infestation besides all those problems

    • Also Snoke was handled badly too for how much they built him up

  • I don't know. I always watch the Star Wars movies. I am perpetually disappointed in them.

The characters often remind me of muppets. The script is just not interesting. Rogue one is prob my favorite of all and it’s just an ok
    Movie.

    • I was a ten year old impressionable boy when I first watched star wars. There is a lot of symbolic reference to fascism and the second world War, this universe that lucas created is awesome.

  • Well, I thought it was apolitical initially as well - and I enjoyed parts of the movie too. However, upon looking back I realised there were a lot of flaws in there.

Rey didn't even have to train to become a Jedi for one - she magically just seemed to master the art of being a Jedi overnight. I dunno, for me that's just not what being a Jedi is all about, it should be earned and cultivated over time. Nobody before her was one with the force instantaneously.

    • I also didn't like what happened with Kylo Ren. Darth Vader is like one of the more ominous and menacing baddies of all time, and Kylo Ren was like some wimpy pathetic kid who had been continuously bullied at school in this movie. Like seriously, I even thought 'get a grip, man'. And of course, Rey beat him without even needing to try. How convenient. That's when I thought to myself... isn't there perhaps a feminist agenda being portrayed here? Girl comes and whoops boy's ass single handedly and he barely puts up a decent fight?

What Guys Said 46

  • - They ruined Luke's character.

    - Rey is still a Mary Sue with no flaws.

    - The casino subplot dragged WAYY too long.

    - Rose is even less tolerable than Jar Jar.

    - They killed Akbar to replace him with Holdo, who only exist to constantly put the man (Poe) in place. *cough* Feminist garbage *cough*

    - They killed Snoke without giving him a backstory

That's just what I could think of from the top of my head. I will never watch Star Wars before the ratings are in again.

  • It was well made yes but thay doesn't make it good, Batman vs Superman was well made and that was a crock of shit too

I think what annoyed me most was that I didn't care about any of the characters, I liked all the characters in the force awakens but only Poe and Finn (up until he wasn't allowed to kamikaze into the battering ram) where the only interesting characters. But even then Finn was getting on my nerves because he was with Rose and was more of a fangirl character than people accused Rey of being the the force awakens. I'm only going and seeing han solo in cinemas because a lot of it doesn't look like star wars, I'm not bothering with ep 9 I really don't care and this is coming from a hardcore nerd that was buying all the Canon books.

The last point I'd make is that it doesn't make me want to watch another star wars movie, all the other including the prequels abd that clone wars movie makes me wanna watch more Star wars, episode 8 on the other hand, I don't want to watch any more.

  • (spoilers)
Some are angry because of :

    1. Luke Skywalker's personality shift : He goes to hero helping the rebel fight a totalitarian regime to an grumpy old man without any sense of honor. It's like you take your childhood hero and make him a shitless looser. (heavy spoiler) They killed/suicide/let him go.

2.(Leia don't count we don't nkow what happen between the trilogy) Rey doesen't need trainning she's already at jedi knight level: This bug the shit out of me. In every trilogy the jedi (force user) have to train to become good with the force. This traine is either showed or impliquely mention. Luke wasn't born good and Anakin wasn't also. This show poor writing (even if rey was a man)

    3. Finn is the only new character who had really good potential character developpement. He was the redemtion type charracter. He was born and brainwashed into something bad and he was on his path to redemption. But they turned him into a joke/a failure.(Even if Finn was a women this would have been amazing... I think if he was a woman it would have been even better)

    4. Supreme leader snoke was kill off without any explanation on his backstory. Who the fuck is this guy. He saw the rise and fall of empire. Where was he during emperor palpatine's time.

    5. Star wars fucked the expanded universe with this trilogy destroying all of start wars lore that was built, RIP Revan / Darth Revan, Jacen solo and jaina solo epic storyline, Luke skywalker's epic sotry.

    6. False Diversity shove down the throat. Some people hate that. Usually I don't mind too much but in this movie men were seen as imbecile which is really bad for true diversity.

    7. Weak main villain: Kylo ren is an angry child created by the most loved hero of star wars... WTH

    8. Disney does not really follow the light and dark side of the force therory enough.

    9. Weak plot twist

10 Personal reason : I felt like this was some badly written fanfic. To add I saw better written star was fanfiction...

  • It had some good things in it- but overall it sucked. It’s all SJW bullshit. Killed Luke off. No idea who snoke is. Terrible side stories, and too many women. Fucking liberals in Hollywood today.

    • The only SJW vibe I got was from the purple haired character that went kamikaze.

    • Hopefully Luke will return as a force ghost like yoda in the next film.

    • The only way jj could possibly redeem the shit that happened in TLJ is to bring back luke, obiwan, anikin, and yoda as all force ghosts to fight snoke who comes back as an all powerful sith force ghost. Along side with ki-lo and Rey they destroy him once and for all.

  • Mostly poor story telling, weak main charcters, SJW and feminist propoganda all adds up to a very weak movie.
Daisy Riddley is a terrible actress and the charcter is the very definition of a Mary sue.

  • okay... where do I start...
    1. Rey became a Jedi master in the fight against snoke's honor guard. only problem is... nobody has trained her for more than a week.
    2. Leia defying the laws of space avoiding suffucattion and flying back into the ship, which in other movies when a door is open to space on a ship. all the air goes flying out bringing anyone with it. the cast stood at the door to help pull her in. not to be a ass, but it was a perfect way to kill her character in a well written manner. the cgi they used for her is horrible.
    3. Kylo ren is a idiot. enough said.
    4. smoke died so easily I can't possibly he was the one to force choke an imperial across the galaxy.
    5. if they were going to sacrifice the main ship why not start with that instead of letting most of the transports get destroyed. the mutiny
    should of success.
    6. luke is a old hermit, and made a bad sacrifice. he wanted to kill the Jedi but is naive to the fact people will use the force wether it's a title or not. accidents or not. better to train them properly than leave them alone with it.
    7. the whole luke ghost scene was annoying because the blaster couldn't touch him, but Kylo could duel him with the lightsaber. he hit him with a punch...
now we are left with a handful of soldiers and iconic figures against the Empire. wtf..

oh almost left how finn was able to go have a whole adventure across the galaxy while people died on fleet.
also phasma was suppose to be a juggernaut and they gave her like 6 lines. barely a fight.
    just disappointing in general.
I miss George lucas and all of the canon that has been written over the past couple decades.

  • It doesn't follow up on mythology. The dierctor didn't care about what hapoen int the last movie.
He tried to set up his own apin trilogy in his movie.
The casnio seen should have been cut.
Where are the knights of Ren?

Luke wouldn't have been depressed. His characterization was destroyed.

    I love ray though.

They had zero idea what to do with finn and he's gonna die in the next one

    • Hopefully they won’t kill Finn off, although they did tease it in the climax of this film when he almost sacrificed himself.

    • He has to die. He almost died in force awkaens and almost died in last jedi.

Maybe rey kills him or something. Because she need to go to the dark side. While kylo goes to the light

    • That would be a interesting twist to the story.

  • It was hardly apolitical and the story was ridiculous and pointless. When you watch it the first time it seems fun and all but afterwards looking back you realize how dumb it all was. That’s why people shit on it.

    • Alright, maybe I didn’t really like the purple haired character.

  • I didn't like what they did with Finn and his stupid side quest in the movie, Benicio Del Toro was wasted for his random and unexplained character. Rian Johnson pretty made gave 2 big middle fingers to everything established in Force Awakens and he made Rey a hypocrite.

I enjoyed Rey in the first film, she was (Besides Finn) my favorite character and her chemistry with Finn was great. In the Last Jedi she spent her whole time trying to convince a whiny Luke Skywalker to fight a battle he was responsible for while getting to know and sympathise with Kylo Ren only to do the very thing to Kylo Ren that she got pissed at Luke for doing. She didn't trust Kylo Ren even though the whole first half of the film was them bonding and learning to trust one another. Then she betrays him when he offers him her hand and for her to help him rebuild the order and make balance. Then Luke does for no good reason and Snoke was never a factor, who was Snoke? Where did he come from? How did be evade the Empire or did he? So many questions and none of them answered, it left us frustrated.

Asked from all the let downs, the plot was just meh and the characters were dumb. EXCEPT for Emo Ren who I hated in the Force Awakens but if it weren't for Adam Driver's portrayal in the Last Jedi, the film would have been unwatchable.

Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy are outspoken SJW's though. They don't deny it

    • Yes, I also think they killed off snoke too soon. Too bad JJ Abrahams didn’t direct this film. But at least he’ll be directing the next one.

    • They did kill Snoke too soon, he was a wasted villain. Star Wars has a tendency to do that.

  • What I am hearing is a lot of complaints on how disney is shitting on the idea of how the force works
a lot of magical suddenly people can do things that other characters in the past had to study for years or decades to do
Basically - disney is still doing what disney does - pump up the dollars and fuck the storyline

    0|1
    0|0
    • There are certainly some contradictions. Finn as a non-force sensitive should never have been able to last as long as he did against Ren, in fact he should have fallen at Ren's first thrust.

    • @Jackblue In fact he probably should have cut himself into peices with the lightsabre

Rey should have had the same problem, since she'd never seen one before, let alone had any training.

The plot holes and contradictions just stacked up. That part of it all was VERY dissapointing and not that surprising. Disney rarely puts much effort into keeping a storyline consistant - they make them for the money not for the fans or the story/art

Say what you like about the prequels - the day lucas sold it off and stopped writing it Star Wars took a dive.

In all the media I do I will be using the older legends stuff from the books, most of this stuff in the latest movies I am going to cut out.

  • Keeping it apolitical, Disney did a terrible job of keeping it apolitical just like they have done with almost everything they took over, I mean if they wanted to be apolitical they should've just made the movies instead of going out of their way to appease people who cry constantly, I mean these are the people who say there aren't enough female protagonists, than get upset when female protagonists are sexualized or even more attractive than average, It took me five minutes into disney's first star wars for me to be sure whether Rey was a girl or a guy. Add to that the fact Disney likes big names almost as much as they like to get rid of the existing characters, I mean back in 2014 they tried to give a mortal Thor's hammer call and were trying to tell us that she is Thor now and they assumed no one would get pissed off by this, first of all wielding the power of Thor does not mean you are now Thor, Thor is a name not a title, they could have called her Lady Thor or Thor Girl and therefore she wouldn't be taking the name away from Thor, they did this trying to attract a different audience even though the Thor already had a well established audience. Disney did the same thing to Star Wars they assumed just because it said Star Wars they could replace all the characters with flat characters that were designed with a focus on appealing to specific demographics, instead of focusimg on giving the characters depth, and that the existing Star Wars audience would be ok with that.

  • To be clear I disagree with one or two.

Lazy writing, shat on the previous film, Luke died which most didn't want, Snoke was wasted, Luke was nothing like how people imagined he would be, real lack of force use outside of Luke, Rose was pointless, the whole casino planet part was pointless, a whole section could've been removed if Holdo had told the captain of their fighter ships what the plan was, Phasmas death in the deleted scene was better and she had almost no part

    There's probably more

  • If you can look past the Disney dogmatic politics, the new movies are reasonable.

  • The new star wars movies aren't George Lucas films (creator) of star wars he told Disney to kick rocks because he wasn't going to give them any more stories, so the new movies aren't part of the actual star wars story at all. Disney started making their own star wars films starting with force awakens and everything after it including rogue... real star wars fans know the stories and the episodes and who the true characters are like rey and kylo ren are made up. Disney trashed George Lucas and when Disney approached him for the story behind Yoda he said no so Disney killed off han solo Disney is ruining everything including the avengers

  • Nothing beats the originals? Because they had high expectations for it to be as close to the standards and quality of the originals? Whatever the case may be, everyone has their own opinions and biases. The fanbase and community will always have a consensus, majority vs the minority. Guess more fans of the originals became upset at how it all turned out, especially in regards to all of the original characters like Leia, Luke and Han Solo, although Chewbacca seemed to not have changed much if at all. But whatever the case may be I had a good laugh at those "Porgs", to me that was the funniest and most interesting part of the movie, I don't give a fuck what others think of me for saying that, because that's MY OPINION and that's just what I ENJOYED ABOUT IT. And the next thing you know, they might even have a fucking spin off called "Porg Wars".

    • It wasn't thrilling enough, but I think the reason is quite the opposite. Too much action without proper build up, not enough calm scenes in contrast to the action.

    • I don’t think that’s the reason why people actually hated this movie, although a lot of people are tired Hollywood’s political bias, people seem to criticize it due to the story.

    • I hated it for its crappy feminist Mary Sue Poorly written BS.

      And yet.. funny...

I like Wonder Woman and Black Panther. General Okaya (you know, black AND female) in particular was pretty good!

So are you certain it's just because "it stars a woman and people of color?"

Maybe because it's just bad because Rian Johnson, Kathleen Sebilius, and J. J. Abrams suck and building compelling stories without screwing it over with their personal and ultimately empty politics.
