What is your favorite indie singer/band of all time? How did you come to know them?

My favorite to this day is/was aequitaS, mostly known trough german YouTube. I came to know about him in 2008 because he did a tribute song for my favorite german youtubers deceased sister.

I fell in love with this voice right from the beginning... Along with original songs there also were lots of covers and rock-versions of cartoon or anime songs, or also the title song to on of the first german Youtube-movie projects "Therapie" which is my favorite song by him.

Then came the year 2013 and aequitaS came out as transsexual. Since then she deleted all of her previous videos (luckily most of them still are there, uploaded by fans) and calls herself Sk3pn4. She still makes music, but its just not the same anymore... this powerful voice is just gone :/

How about you? Do you know an independant singer/band you'd like to share? :)

Scandal (Japanese: スキャンダル Hepburn: Sukyandaru, stylized as SCANDAL) is an all-female Japanese rock band from Osaka. Formed in August 2006 by four high school girls, they played live street performances until they were noticed and signed to the indie label Kitty Records. Although all four members have provided lead vocals, their primary roles are Haruna on vocals and rhythm guitar, Mami on lead guitar, Tomomi on bass guitar, and Rina on drums. In 2008, they released three singles and a mini-album while performing shows in the United States, France, and Hong Kong. That October, Scandal released their major debut single, "Doll", on Epic Records Japan.
The band has performed the theme songs for several anime, including "Shōjo S" and "Harukaze" for Bleach and "Shunkan Sentimental" for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. With numerous overseas performances and anime theme songs, Scandal has built a considerable international fanbase.

  • Young Empires (Matthew Vlahovic), homegrown Canadian. Saw them in a Youtube ad for Coors Light Altitude one day for their song "So Cruel" (the ad is also a music video) and then learned that's not even their best song. But it is one of their best.

  • Bloc Party was always considered "indie" back in the day... band out of the U. K. London I believe... They immediately popped into my mind. Kind of an alternative "post-punk" sound really... Loved their first two albums Silent Alarm and A Weekend in the City.

  • I really like Emily Whitehurst. I ended up finding her music at college when Rotting Vampire Eyeballs came on the college radio station.
