  • Star Wars have always been a polarized story were the good ones are left and they are always very good and the bad ones represents right and they are really bad. The stupid speech good vs bad, left vs right. Every Star Wars movie has it somehow. There's no movie where the bad guy is not that bad or the good guy does a big terrible mistake. Everything is too simple and childish.

I think it got worst with Disney. They are just trying to make new movies repeating the same boring speech all the time, without working too much in the script. They just want to produce movies fast so they can get money faster. All characters are psychologically flat, which worked in the past, but now people diserves psychological complexity and a script that doesn't insult intelligence.

I would rather say that for me the bad guys are from totalitarian movements, and there are right and left totalitarisms. Right totalitarian movement is fascism and left totalitarian movement is communism.

When I see the way Star Wars simplifies good and bad it reminds me how Spanish Civil War is sometimes simplified by some people inside our country. The thing is that not everybody inside a movement that fights for a good cause always behave the right way.

For example in Spanish Civil War, the "good guys" are Republicans, because they defend democracy against fascism. However inside the republicans defenders there were communist and anarchists killing each other or other republicans and allies just to take power over the Republic when in that moment Republic was weak due to the fascist coup and the war, so that behavior of taking power anarchists had and after them communist also had only made republicans weaker against facists.

    • Good to know, thank you for the lesson. I don't know much about the Spanish Cvili War. And you're right, totalitarian movements are always bad, no matter what side they're from.

  • Disney in general is ruining Star Wars. For one, in Star Wars, the Empire was a government that was the successor to the Republic and we actually know it's based of the Nazi, the Seperatist wanted independence, the Republic wanted the Seperatist to stay, etc. But with the new sequel, it's not clear what the First Order wants really. What do they want politically? I mean they hate the new republic and want to be like the Empire, but we don't see much about what the conflict is over. In the second movie, we're introduced to Rose, which was a completely unnecessary addition. Not to mention, all the questions we had for the first movie had unsatisfactory answers. Who were Rey's parent? Oh they weren't anyone significant. Who is Snoke? Who cares? He's dead. And the scene where we left off when Rey gives Luke his lightsaber was suppose to be an emotional scene and had the potential to be better, but instead they wanted a few seconds of humour. Also, they introduced a ton of promotional things. The Porgs are fine if they were just playing a small minor role. It just introduce more of the Universe's wildlife, but what is up with so much focus on these creature? And it's not like they really contributed at all. Not to mention, why do they introduce planets like the Casino planet nobody has heard of? Or why did they have a scene where they were running away on those creature? It didn't feel Star Wars like at all. And what was up with the First Order's strategy? That was the lamest combat ever. And the Purple hair lady of the Resistance, why does she not trust anyone? The only cool character the fans were interested in was Phasma, and they just threw her away again.

In short, Disney is unable to make Star Wars movie. It seems like the new movie don't belong to the old movie's universe. It seems like it is it's own universe.

    • But you have to remember that Disney didn't write this script. Abrams had some decent setup in Awakens, but then Rian Johnson came and pissed on everything.

    • Show All
    • I agree. Again, Rian pissing on everything. Then they have the fucking gal to say that Star Wars fans are misogynistic trolls for disliking the movie. POS

    • The Empire was Nazi Germany, and the First order is Alt Right/ Neo-Nazis, etc.

  • Let's see:

A Mary Sue protagonist who magically becomes an expert with anything she touches?
    Check.

A rather unlikely amount of mixed ethnicity teams?
    Check.

All white male characters are either villains or butchered legacy characters?
    Check.

    Anti-capitalist messaging?
    Check.

Yeah it's pretty much progressive propaganda. The only way they can make it even more so is by making every other character gay or transsexual, if they haven't already.
No, I am not a woman-hater or racist or whatever. I just see the new Star Wars movies for what they are. I am fine with female protagonists and liberal themes as long as they are done right and not done at the expense of storytelling.

    • @Jonny317 A handful of days of training is still infinitely more than being able to mind trick a stormtrooper while barely even knowing the force exists. In regards to Kylo, I am not sure how much he was trained by Luke before he turned, but as he can stop a blaster bolt with the force, it's pretty clear he knows what he is doing.

    • That's true. Still doen't seem that big of a deal.

  • no. mass production, over saturation, and lack of good stories are ruining star wars

what do we think would happen to a franchise that is being bled dry simply to make money. i have not seen a star wars after the 2nd trilogy. i may never see a stars after the 2nd trilogy. the story, the good one, was told 40+ years ago. everything now is a cash grab pure and simple

    • I mean... there’s literally no end to the amount of good stories that could be told about Star Wars. The universe is infinitely big and the lore is incredible.

I wanted a plaguius (?) backstory. Hell, they could just give us a film from the Sith POV, but noooooo that’s not going to fly. Especially now that they’ve fucked it.

    • i agree about both. i thought the prequels were at least interesting and watchable. strangely despite stories developed by Lucas and screenplays at least overseen by Kasdan who did the original screen plays, the new movies they just seem to miss the mark or not have any passion in them.

  • I dunno if the left had much to do with it, as the characters would be lame even if they weren't a token black guy with a forced strong female lead.

Episode 7 was so bad, I made a vow to never watch another star wars film again, (unless it is the original 6.)

  • No, Disney are ruining Star Wars. All the SJW nonsense is only a small part of why recent Star Wars films have sucked ass.

    • I know! I was really looking forward to seeing why Snoke was so powerful and where had come from, not to mention finding out who Rey's parents were. Instead he scraps both of them (in absolutely ridiculous ways) and then ruins Luke Skywalker while letting Leia survive. Everything about it was just awful.

    • It made NO FUCKING SENSE!
Carrie Fischer died, would've been an excellent time to take her out in an impactful way. Make it a part of Kylo's development. Snoke, the most powerful sith we've seen, possibly stronger than the Emperor killed in the most ridiculous way. Rey's connection with Luke's saber, nothing. Luke Skywalker an angry old curmudgeon who mocks and belittles the kid he tried to assassinate and he has no hope!
That's what Skywalker's character fucking was! He's the NEW HOPE

  • Haha! I don't think politics factor into Disney's Star Wars strategy. That would get in the way of making more money. Do I think the far-left is hurting Star Trek? Yes! Star Trek: Discovery is pushing political agendas way too early. Plus it isn't subtle. In my opinion, Star Wars is safe. At least the movies. I can't speak for the cartoons.

    • I’m not a Trekkie so couldn’t say.
Disney isn’t making the movies though. It’s all left to Lucasfilm like Marvel’s movies. I have a feeling that will change though now that they’re losain’t big money.

  • They are ruining it but i think it's a good thing. A lot of Americans are way to obsessed with their bread and circuses. • Cool thanks, although I’d slightly disagree on the last portion. If I’m to trust some of the cosmologists I’ve heard of (Lawrence Krauss and Neil Degrasse if memory serves) quite a few people get into the field or are interested in the field because of movies like Star Wars and Trek

    • Yes, but there's a difference between the handful of people who got into sciences because they were inspired and more who are basement dwellers that speak wookie but live with their parents.

  • There are several problems with your question: 1) "Far-left" and "far-right" and "centrist" or whatever are pointless labels that do nothing to accurately describe anything. 2) The answer is simply "no," not no-with-a-caveat; why didn't you simply include one of your answers as "no," not "no they're the same." Because they're not the same. 3) Shitty writing and bad plot and crappy over-use of CGI and one or two unnecessary characters ruined The Last Jedi, not politics.

    1|1
    0|1
    • 1) So you're answer would just be "The "far-left" is poorly defined and as such didn't ruin the movie." Not hard.
      2) "The "far-left" is poorly defined and as such didn't ruin the movie."
      3) "The movies were bad, but not because of politics"

      Is that right?

    • No, I'm referring to your comment of "they're the same." They're not the same, but the answer to your is also "no." What I was saying was that one of your options should simply have been "no" with no other caveat included.

    • A token woman? Who are you thinking of? Senator/ Queen/ General Organa? Leader of the rebellion, killer of Jabba the Hutt, rescuer of Han Solo and more?

  • The Right (especially MRA's) who grew up with Star Wars and believe that it belonged to them are upset that someone else is telling the story. To be honest, Star Wars was ruined with Phantom Menace and rejuvinated with Ep 7. Weak men fear strong women.

    • How was Haldo fine? She ridiculed Poe for the "crime" of destroying a dreadnought and saving the entire "resistance" or "rebellion" (whichever they were calling themselves at that moment). Leia was just as bad in that exchange, but it was all Haldo's plan and it was all Haldo's decision to refuse to tell Poe. The lesson to be learned from this interaction has been pointed out by many people, "shut up and follow orders no matter what." Those claiming that this is a result of the whole feminism movement is that the men are being told to shut up and listen to women no matter what. This hypothesis would make sense here, but not so much for some of the other plotlines, but the others are also explicable through this lens. (I know this is sort of shoe-horned, but I'm trying to catch it up to the actual discussion)
So to summarize the main points those claiming the feminist/ far-left ruining arguments-------

    • 1) Poe told to shutup and listen to women. He is also degraded and humiliated by his superiors (all women) for actually successfully saving the rebellion. (many websites point out that Poe is the epitome of toxic masculinity)
      2) Finn's chance to be a hero is stolen by Rose (self sacrifice to save the rebellion stopped by Rose) and then there's the ridiculous statement by Rose as the rebellion is surely bound for absolute annihilation.
      3) Rey is a "Mary Sue". She never faces any real struggle and never earns anything. She is a better warrior than Luke without any training. She's a better force user than any master without any training. She's completely self-made and trained. Etc etc.
      4) (Almost) Everyone who says this movie was good only applaud the diversity and cinematography; whereas (almost) everyone else says the plot and characters were trash. In response the writer/director, and that one lady in charge, and JJ all called those who didn't like this film misogynists or bigots.

Reacting negatively to someone saving you is baffling.

They've been trying to use it as a left-wing ideology platform for SJW bullshit that mirror the leftwings imagine revolution against America, conservatives and Trump but it's not been working and Kathleen Kennedy getting fired shows that Disney was pissed the movie didn't sell enough tickets in Asia and sell enough toys. I dont know what solo was like because I refused to see it but the last Jedi was bad, the script was bad, the charcters were bad and what they did with like Skywalker was terrible. • Let's see... George Lucas, a far left wing borderline nutjob created Star Wars and then ran it into the ground... check.

Then Disney, a giant multinational corporation with a liberal culture, came along and picked it up. They made Rogue One, and then started a nosedive back into the ground.

So, the far left is responsible for creation of the franchise itself, and Skywalker and Vader and Han Solo and Chewy... but the far left is also responsible for Jar-Jar and Kylo Ren.

Sounds like the far left is setting it up and knocking it down. It may be running the franchise into the ground, but it's not like the Right has anything to do with it whatsoever.

It actually goes back to a hypothesis I have about my own field (engineering): Liberal engineers are great at creating innovative new technologies, and Conservative engineers are great at making existing things awesome.

We should let the Left handle the first episode in a story arc and let the Right handle the sequels lolz ;)

    • @Sixgun77 Sure, I think that would be better. Even comics have difficulty with this though. The one that comes to mind is the comic Thor. Not only they crib off of Nordic paganism and change it entirely, but later comics even come back and (I hear) now have a woman Thor. Why? Why not make her a new character? Why not pick a badass female Norse god like Freya or Hel and make better stories about them?
Whatever I guess I can see both arguments. I think directors have a responsibility to the fans, but also have the license to make artistic changes.

    • Sorry, I'm just going to be a fan of artistic license when it comes to that kind of stuff. I'm all for continuing and adding to stories, just don't change what's already established.
For instance, when making the novel Moby Dick into a movie, what's the point of hiring a writer? It's already written! Everything is there already, just put it on screen. I'm not going there to see some DIFFERENT story.
