Help with writing - what crime could he have committed?

In the novel I'm writing there's a character who's supposed to have been a criminal. He's supposed to have really much money. However, I'm unsure of what criminal offense he could've done... Was thinking drugs but that one is a bit "common"? Or? Help please?

  • i really enjoyed movies such as "boiler room" and "molly's game". it's clean, illegal and gets out of control quickly.

white collar crimes are less cliche than what we normally see. watch "money never sleeps" and "the big short".

i hope you gain some inspiration from these. i would love to hear your thoughts on what you're considering.

  • He's a mug smuggler. Contrary to, common knowledge, tbe US has a shortage of mugs. Have you noticed how hard it is to get a mug of coffee at a coffee shop? Nothing but paper cups. So this man smuggles mugs in from Siberia. The only problem, is, they all have Sarucks written on them, because the mug printing company ran out of ink, and they're Siberian and don't know how to spell. So the man hired 13 prostitutes to scrub the word Sarucks off the mugs.

  • Ok, is he a dick character or a smooth talker? Does he have a past of military, perhaps rebel army commander at one time left country with blood money of the Ruler. Is he European, American or perhaps from Greenland raised by "wait for it"... Scientists! Ok just sayin the whole character is made by his/her experiences. What brings someone to take lots of money, and get away? Must have been the reliable one, or best trained or least known about or literally has found a treasure of the past that never was reported. Maybe a king had a secret son and paid off kids mother who passed and King made sure anonymously kid had best of everything. Too many... more filter haha
