Can you solve this classic merchant trick question?

A merchant just sold apples worth 3$, but after few minutes , the customer returned back and retuned apples to merchant and instead asked to buy grapes worth 8$, but the customer only paid 2$, saying that he returned the apple which were worth 3$, and he paid 3$ too when he bought those apple, hence he already paid 6$ and only 2$ less to make 8$, the merchant agreed, but later when the merchant calculated his profit, he found out that he was tricked.

So what happened here? Now start brainstorming
