Why do America tv shows last too long?

Back in the day with network/cable shows being the norm, you filled prime time television slows, mainly from 8 pm until 11 pm. If everything were only a half hour, then they would have to develop twice as many shows to fill those slots.

A full 45 minutes (with 15ish minutes of commercials) gave more time to develop storylines and set up narratives as well.

a lot of Hollywood is based on, "this is how we've always done it" (for like 100 years). that's why soap operas are so bad

there is a trend toward trying shorter format dramas on new platforms, even 10 minutes in some cases
