In anger, how often do we actually mean what we say?

This is just a short clip from cartoon Rocko's Modern Life:Rocko the Wallaby is best friends with Heffer the steer.
Rocko: Take your, big, fat, butt! And your green hair out of my life... FOREVER
Heffer: Green hair? Why, you creepy little pouched rodent!

Real life experience:
I've gotten into a huge verbal (it almost lead to a physical fight if it wasn't for my mother intervening) argument with my good friend. We said the meanest things ever that we can think about each other. Just like in the cartoon version, whatever we tolerated about each other became the target areas in our argument. We were 15 at the time. In the end, both of us were in the wrong and it was a stupid thing to fight about.
In anger, how often do we actually mean what we say?
