Thanks for the MHO.
My cat was vomiting like 6 times per day and having diarrhea and bloody stools Turns out he had pancreatitis
Not seeking veterinary advice would have put you at risk of prosecution. I'd have predicted salmonella from the stools. Hope the cat recovers.
Well, he was vomiting up everything he ate or drank so he likely would have died of dehydration if we didn't go to the vet. I would mention how my cat is currently doing but I don't want to jinx us :p
It doesn't cost $1000 to diagnose that. The medical history would have prompted him to request an amylase blood test. Most labs group tests into packages according to symptoms such as diarrhoea package to keep costs down and speed diagnosis. Most of your bill is for his time not the actual tests.
Well first off I live in the US and you dont so prices may be different. But first they did a blood test for hyperthyroidism and kidney disease and other diseases, but apparently they used 2 tubes and lost 1 of them so the other diseases weren't checked, and it came back that his kidney and thyroid were perfect. Next they did an ultrasound to see if he had cancer which he didn't, thank God. So they did another blood test to see if he had other diseases & he came back positive for pancreatitis. If they didn't lose the tube in the first exam then we probably wouldn't have had to pay for an ultrasound, assuming pancreatitis was one of the diseases tested in that tube.
On the first day, he also needed antinausea shots, and fluids since he was so dehydrated from the vomiting and diarrhea.

Have you ever had a pet?
As a kid I had a lot of reptiles and two dogs. But I was too young to know about insurance let alone pet insurance. I just found out about vet insurance two months ago.
I'm so sorry :(
Same here. Just put down my best friend. Lymphoma cancer. Vet wanted to start chemo therapy but I didn't want her to go through all that. She was only 4 years old 😢
@Steve7150 my baby girl was 5. She passed away 2 weeks before the outbreak. I was stuck indoors and I didn't have her. It took a huge toll on my mind and spirit.
My consolences to u. I feel u. My girl passed during covid too so they wouldn't even let me in the building to be with her but they brought her out to my car and I held her for 2 hours before handing her over to the nurse outside wearing face mask. I'm a grown man but I cried like a little girl 😢 It's harder during these times to be without them. Sorry for your loss.
Pancreatitis. He was throwing up everything he ate or drank, having diarrhea, and blood in his litterbox. He's now on medication. I would tell you how he's doing but I don't want to jinx us :p
Aw man. I'm so sorry to hear that. :(. Poor baby.Yes- I understand. 👌. But I hope that means he's feeling a little bit better! 🙂
I agree to a certain extent, but the fewer people getting animals, the more animals will be euthanized because shelters can only care for so many.Is an animal better off being euthanized at 2 years old?
An animal is better off being put out of its misery if the owners can’t afford medical bills and leave the innocent animal to suffer, yes.
I'm referring to the cat being euthanized when it's still young and doesn't have health problems.
So you take a young cat while broke and HOPE that they don’t end up having health problems? If you want to be a good pet owner then you need to be selfless and make sure that you actually are able to give them a good life. In no way am I happy about animals who are put down, I volunteered for a shelter and fostered dogs and currently own 5 pets. But getting a pet with no finances is just selfish and often cruel.
I fostered a young puppy who was labelled as healthy by vets. 2 weeks later, I found the puppy dead due to a cardiovascular disease that went undetected. If you can’t afford serious medical issues, do not get pets. It’s about THEIR life and THEM being happy and secure, not about your want for a puppy or a kitty.
I live outside of the US, we can afford them but they are priced ridiculously. We had to pay a stupid amount of money when my rabbit had to have an impacted tooth removed as well.
I could never imagine shooting my pet.
I could never imagine paying $1000 on a pet.
Why are they 10x that?
I have like 160 animals
