Do I stop talking to my parent that’s doing drugs?

This is a tough one. This is just my opinion based on the limited info you gave. I think you should stay in contact with him UNLESS it starts to negatively affect you. If it affects you negatively, it might be best to stop talking to him, or at least cut back.

Losing his daughter might even be enough to cause him to quit. But keep in mind that with drugs and alcohol, it's the drugs and alcohol that are controlling him. If he can't quit for your sake, it's not about you. The drugs have him, and they don't let go easily. So you absolutely do not want to think this is about you, or that he doesn't care about you. Neither one is the case.

When someone you care about is an alcoholic or drug abuser, it can be very hard on you. It's fine to care about him, but ultimately you have to take care of yourself first. Don't let him wreck your life.

Don't make the mistake of thinking he will change in the future. Don't ever assume he will change until long after it's already happened. Positive thinking doesn't work with drugs and alcohol. You have to assume that he will continue and act accordingly.

My mother is an alcoholic and I haven't talked to her in years. It's distressing not having a mother figure, but it's worth not having to deal with all the bullshit and anxiety. She'll appear to me in my dreams at times, and even there she's still drunk and I wonder if a sober version of her ever even existed.

In my opinion, toxic is toxic. I don't really talk to either of my parents and some of my siblings because of that. If you wouldn't put up with it from a friend, you shouldn't put up with it from family.
